Paintings to Challenge Perceptions of Equality - Samuel Levi Jones - Artist Talk 6pm @ Art and Journalism Building, Ball State University Room 225 1001 N. McKinley Ave.
Samuel Levi Jones’ multidisciplinary practice includes making patchworked paintings and installations to challenge people’s perceptions of authority, exclusion, and equality. He explores the framing of power structures and struggles between exclusion and equality by desecrating historical material, then reimagining new works. He is the recipient of the 2014 Joyce Alexander Wein artist prize awarded to him by the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY — an annual award honoring emerging or mid-career African American artists. His work is in prominent private and public collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MOMA); The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; The Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; and the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, IN.

This exhibition brings together six of the most recognizable artists who have all achieved statewide and national prominence. The show will open with a party on First Thursday, February 6, 5 – 8 pm. Brian Gordy, Alan Patrick, John Peterson, and Carol Wasson will attend and be available for questions and conversation. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.
“It is thrilling to see all these artists in the same space. They have known each other and influenced each other for a very long time. They have also had a long impact on the generation that follows them,” says owner Carl Schafer. “Their commitment to their own artistic lives is matched by their commitment to fostering the artistic talent of their many students.”
At 6:15 Brian Gordy will give an informal talk about his own work and his long relationship with the other artists in the show. Brian and his wife Genny were owners of the gallery from 1989 – 2015. Sue Gordy is the Muncie Artists Guild “Artist of the Month.” Her work will be shown at various downtown locations.Sue’s bio: “An interest in drawing buildings and having a father who built houses motivated me to enroll in architecture classes at Ball State University (one of three women in my class in the early 1970s). Ultimately, I worked my way through Ball State's business college and later was employed by Ball Corp. and Boyce Design Center, where I met Jim Faulkner and was inspired by his watercolor landscapes. In midlife, I switched from sales and marketing to library science. Subsequently, I worked in several Indiana public libraries. My passions include gardening with native plants, ecology, geography, and animals. I have rescued many animals and volunteered at several animal shelters. Our backyard is a wildlife habitat near the White River and the Cardinal Greenway, where I enjoy walking and bicycling. After retiring, I learned to paint with watercolors, and recently, to use colored pencils as a medium for the portraits I enjoy creating, working from my own photos. My grandsons and my pets are my favorite subjects.”
