YART is a Yard Sale for Art held on the First Thursday of every May and October! All Art under $40! All Artists handle their sales with you directly!
The pandemic has challenged everyone on Earth, and most recently, my related challenge has been as long-time Director of YART, Muncie’s Yard Sale for Art, coming up - and going fully online - on Thursday, October 1st. YART is my giant twice-a-year volunteer gift to Muncie. I never charge any Artist to participate; and I have no staff and no budget. I heartily invite the entire community to come buy some Art at YART on October’s First Thursday at the following Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4827417053950079

Erin Mallea // Artist Talk and One-night Viewing Of "The Cicada Chorus"
6:00pm @
PlySpace Gallery
608 E Main Street, Muncie, IN 47305
Join The Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MACC) for a one-night exhibition and artist talk led by PlySpace Artist in Residence, Erin Mallea. Mallea’s video project, “The Cicada Chorus”, will premiere for a one-night only public viewing following an artist talk on Tuesday, June 29, at 6:00 pm at PlySpace Gallery. The artist talk will focus on the work Mallea has completed at PlySpace, as well as previous work. “The Cicada Chorus” was created in collaboration with participants from the Muncie Community. This event is free and open to the public, with masks required.
Since joining PlySpace in May, Mallea has collaborated with individuals from the Muncie community as well as the Ball State Environmental Education Center, John Vessels of Ball State Theatre and Dance, Camp Adventure, and Red-Tail Land Conservancy to listen to and observe insect noises in the area. The research and recorded sounds were used to develop a performance video where participants make sounds to imitate a choral insect cacophony. The chorus, and subsequent video, celebrates the particularities of the region’s ecosystem and the often taken for granted “others” we live alongside that are integral to our ecosystem.
Mallea writes: “The chorus is an opportunity for collective close-looking and listening as an entrypoint to playfully, yet earnestly inhabit a non-human sensibility. The chorus has become a collective clock: mimicking the sounds of cicadas shifting from dawn to dusk and spring to summer.”
About the Artist:
Erin Mallea (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist motivated by an attempt to better understand the spaces she inhabits. Collapsing personal, natural, and national history, her work explores the past and present of particular microcosms as metaphors for larger human and environmental conditions. Analytical, meandering, playful, and often public in nature, her work scrutinizes systems of producing knowledge, place, and relationships to nature in the American landscape and manifests in a range of media including video, audio, sculpture, photography, performance, writing, and participatory projects. Mallea has exhibited internationally, advocated for the ethical memorialization of a historic oak tree, and recently sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere. Based in Pittsburgh, PA, Mallea teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and Carlow University.

- James McMurtry at the Muncie Three Trails Music Series 7:00pm @ Canan Commons 500 S. Walnut St
The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is thrilled to present the 9th season in which the series presents critically acclaimed national recording artists in four FREE concerts at Canan Commons in Downtown Muncie. All shows begin at 7 PM and are all ages. And this season, we will also be presenting a special “Bonus” concert at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Complete information on the series and all artists, including samples of their music, can be found at www.munciethreetrails.com.
Americana artist James McMurtry will open our series on Saturday, July 30th. With eight albums, including American Music Awards’ “Album of the Year” winner Childish Things, a Grammy nomination, and having one of his songs, “We Can’t Make It Here” named by famed music critic Robert Christgau in 2010 as “Song of the Decade,” McMurtry’s list of accolades is impressive. His latest release, The Horses and the Hounds, continues his tradition of writing hardscrabble songs about good people at bad extremes and the disintegration of small towns in flyover America. Muncie native Mike Martin and the Beautiful Mess will open the show.
The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is a non-profit partnership between Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, Muncie Arts and Culture Council, and Rick Zeigler, series founder and organizer. The mission of the series is to bring critically acclaimed, national recording artists to perform at Canan Commons, Muncie’s premier outdoor performance venue, located in the heart of Downtown Muncie. A second mission is to promote the many recreational, artistic, and cultural attractions located along, or in close proximity to, Canan Commons and Muncie’s popular “Three Trails” -- The White River Greenway, Cardinal Greenway, and Muncie Arts and Culture Trail. We hope attendees will heed our slogan, “Explore the Trails, Enjoy the Music”.
