Cyanotype Sun Print! Make your own at the Pool Project!

Muncie Arts and Culture Council’s artist-in-residence program PlySpace continues its summer programming with a new project in collaboration with the Muncie Tuhey Pool and PlySpace resident artist  Anthony Bowers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bowers will partner with the Tuhey Pool as the site for his Pool Project, an interactive art-making experience using the public pool as a catalyst for creativity.

The goal of Bowers’ Pool Project is to collaboratively explore the site of the pool as a social space through listening, sharing stories, and art making. Working with the artist, patrons will be invited to listen to the sound of pools using underwater hydrophones, to share experiences through interviews, and to make artwork at the pool during dedicated project hours. Bowers is interested in the ways that the public space of a community pool can enhance relationships and break down barriers in a neighborhood. During short, voluntary interview sessions, participants will be asked to examine the benefits of having access to a community pool and the role that a pool plays in their summer experience. Bowers will also have an underwater microphone listening station set up at the pool which will bring the underwater sounds of the pool to life.

In addition to the sound component of the project, participants will have the chance to exercise their creativity by making poolside Cyanotype sun prints, a process where objects are placed on a piece of photographic paper and exposed in the sunlight, revealing vibrant blue and white silhouettes or shadows. This process is an exciting way to commemorate the pool experience and bring an unexpected activity to a popular summer destination.  All participants will make one Cyanotype sun print to take home as well as one to leave with the artist. These sun prints will be used in a forthcoming exhibition at the PlySpace Gallery documenting the work and projects of all three PlySpace Summer Residents.

Crystals are more than just pretty rocks, each type of stone has been known to hold specific benefits in relation to physical, emotional and spiritual well being. This course delving into crystals on an introductory level, continuing into more powerful crystals; stones for the individual’s specific needs; sun and moon charging education; and altar work. About the Instructor: Steph Remington is a local crystal therapist and spiritual guide who believes in the power of stones and crystals. Local artist Debra Gindhart’s January First Thursday exhibit at Madjax Muncie is titled FANCY af 2. Using techniques of assemblage art and altered found art. Vintage fashions and accessories mixed with humorous text create new vibrant contemporary art. Vintage mirrors reflecting the beautiful and comical fanciness. Debra’s “Real Babes Recycle” anthem is visible throughout this latest art installation.

Shane Leffingwell: Artist Shane Leffingwell works with alcohol ink on ceramic tile, sandblasts and paints glass, makes reclaimed art and works with other mediums. This showing will spotlight alcohol inks on  coasters/coaster sets, trivets, spoon rests, individual tiles for display, and paperweights at the Madjax Studios on the 2nd floor from 5-8PM.  He even does light switch and outlet covers!  Leffingwell’s art focuses mostly on abstract images that bring to mind a different idea to each person.  Prices range from $2 to $100.

Sparks is a full-time artist who enjoys painting portraits, figure studies, landscapes and seascapes in oils and pastels. She considers herself blessed for her God-given talent. She started winning awards for her art at a very young age. She won her first award at seven, and received her first portrait commission in her teens. She is self-taught through studying art in national and local museums and learning by experimentation. Her paintings have won numerous awards including “Best of Show” in juried exhibits in Indiana and North Carolina. Her murals have been featured in national magazines and she has been listed in the fine arts section of the “International Who’s Who in Interior Design.”  She currently accepts commissions from throughout the United States. Locally, her work is well recognized in such venues as the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and many private collections.
