Ball State Jazz Sherrie Maricle

Enjoy a concert of standard jazz favorites and original compositions with the Ball State University Jazz Ensembles and guest artist Sherrie Maricle, renowned jazz percussionist. The ensembles are under the direction of Mark Buselli.

Sherrie Maricle leads The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, her quintet FIVE PLAY and co-leads the 3D Jazz Trio. She is also a busy freelance performer, a published composer/arranger and a dedicated educator, clinician, guest conductor and soloist.

With her bands Sherrie has performed at many of the world’s most acclaimed music venues and festivals, from Lincoln Center to the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl and beyond. Additionally, Sherrie and DIVA were featured at the 2017 NEA Jazz Master’s Awards Ceremony, the soundtrack for the NBC-Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular; on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, on TCM’s televised broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center and NHK Japan’s New York Jazz. The band also co-stars in the award-winning documentary film The Girls in the Band.

The mesmerizing Italian acoustic guitarist Luca Stricagnoli tours across the US this fall. Fans of guitar and acoustic music in general will not want to miss these shows!

Stricagnoli’s jaw dropping virtuosity includes playing up to 5 guitars at the same time. His repertoire, performed on double and triple neck guitars he himself designed, includes a blend of popular songs from contemporary rock, film scores and mind-bending originals. He has released four albums, with 100 million views on his Youtube channel.

Pruis Hall is a cozy, intimate auditorium located in the heart of Ball State University’s campus.

With a flair for the wild and unexpected, the genre-defying trio, TAKE3, brings the refinement of a rigorous classical music background and infuses it with rock-star charisma. With training at the World’s top conservatories, TAKE3, created by violinist/vocalist Lindsay Deutsch (Yanni’s featured violin soloist), alongside cello and piano, are creating some of the most exciting and refreshing pop/rock/classical fusion music anywhere in the World.

The Ball State Studio Band is the University’s premier commercial music ensemble. With a focus on funk, R&B, soul, and contemporary popular music, the band is known for its dynamic performances delivered by powerful vocalists, a tight rhythm section, and dazzling horns.

Established in 2017 as the performance group of the Music Media Production program, they have entertained crowds all across the Midwest. From neo-soul to hip-hop and R&B, the band performs its dynamic sets regularly at local and regional venues and corporate events.

Apart from regular performances, this per-audition-only ensemble is a frequent guest in the recording studio. From supporting workshops with A-list guests or serving as the backing band for high-profile recordings, this group allows students to experience commercial music performance in the most authentic way.

Ralston C. “Morgy” Craig, was an outstanding solo saxophonist who worked on a variety of projects with the Ball State band program in the 1950s and 1960s. A scholarship is awarded in his honor at this annual concert.

Third Thursdays is a monthly experimental and electronic music performance held at the Common Market. The show is hosted by local musician crawlinggiants and features a different lineup each month. We present a unique listening experience in a supportive environment for musicians who enjoy expressing themselves in unusual and creative ways. The show is presented free of cover charge and open to all ages. 

The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of #1 country hits and the pop smash, "Elvira," earning them GRAMMY, Dove, CMA, and ACM awards and garnering a host of other industry and fan accolades. The Oaks will bring four decades of charted singles, 50 years of tradition, and Christmas favorites to the stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting.

Missy Raines is a trailblazer in bluegrass music. On her newest release Highlander, the bassist/vocalist/songwriter returns to her bluegrass roots with a musical homage to the peaks and valleys of her native West Virginia. Working again with producer Alison Brown, she delivers a set of 10 songs featuring her touring band Allegheny and including guest appearances from Laurie Lewis, Dudley Connell, Danny Paisley, Kathy MaKea, Michael Cleveland, Rob Ickes, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Darol Anger, Shad Cobb and Alison Brown.

Raines explains: “Making this record and having this band has been sort of a homecoming. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve been able to look back at what I’ve gone through, what I’ve done, and the path I ultimately wanted to take.”

That path has taken Raines on a long and adventurous musical journey which has been informed by the Southern Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic bluegrass of her youth. As a child and young teen, Raines soaked up the sounds of The Country Gentlemen, The Seldom Scene, The Johnson Mountain Boys, and the other neo-progressive groups that propelled bluegrass music forward in the 70s.

The Ball State Opera Theatre program presents their ninth annual Opera Gala. The evening will feature School of Music faculty and students performing together. Drs. Gwinn, Narducci, and Truitt will take the stage alongside their students to perform a variety of works.
