Muncie has grown from a small village established by the Munsee, a subtribe of the Lenape Indians, in 1865, to a city rich with arts, culture, and opportunity. Chartered in 1841 with one-and-one-half acres on the banks of the White River, Beech Grove has grown to encompass over 100 acres, making  it one of the largest cemeteries in the state of Indiana.

Shaun Dingwerth’s book, The Richmond Group Artist, tells the untold story of a group of artists whose interest in fostering art in their community made an authentic contribution to the history of art in America. Taking for their subjects the local people, flora, and landscapes, they developed a distinctive impressionistic style, uninfluenced by other art movements in Indiana. Richmond, Indiana, became an important center for art in the Midwest. Reception and book signing to follow program.

The Big Band from American's Hometown Band will present "Jazz Under the Stars,"at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 23, at the E. B. and Bertha C. Ball Center. This free concert on the front lawn of the former Edmund Burke and Bertha C. Ball family home, 400 Minnetrista Boulevard, will feature classic swing and jazz music. Bring your own chairs!

Infectious diseases touch the lives of everyone. Whether it's something as minor as the common cold or as serious as Ebola, we all have grappled with infections. This DVD series, produced by The Great Courses, will provide a comprehensive overview of diseases from the mundane to the fatal with renowned physician and award-winning professor Dr. Barry Fox of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

London stands as a global metropolitan center and continues to be synonymous with important developments in international business, culture, and politics.  This DVD series, produced by The Great Courses, features veteran lecturer and a renowned American scholar of British history, Professor Robert Bucholz. He will take you through London's history, from its birth as a Roman outpost in the 1st century C.E. to its current status as a 21st-century global village.

Mr. Carmichael has worked 70 years on his own genealogy, tracing his roots as far back as Charlemagne. He will provide insight on how to locate, examine, and organize records. Computer research is not included.  Limited to 15 participants.

The roots of needlepoint go back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, who used small slanted stitches to sew up their canvas tents. Archaeologist Howard Carter, who is known for discovering King Tut’s tomb, found some needlepoint in the cave of a Pharaoh who had lived around 1500 BC. Today, needlepoint offers a wide range of possibilities for self-expression.  In this class, you’ll learn the techniques and stitches necessary to finish the project provided in class. A painted canvas and supplies are provided. 

On January 1, 1908, the Muncie chapter of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees went on strike over unfair labor practices. On the first day, “Five persons were injured and two streetcars were riddled with stones.” The situation quickly turned violent and Muncie Mayor Leonidas Guthrie requested support from Indiana Governor Frank Hanly to restore order. Hanly instituted martial law in the city for several weeks. This presentation explores this unique event in Muncie’s history.

This DVD series, produced by The Great Courses, steps into the world of forensic science and focuses on the most fascinating historical crimes and mysteries from the last two centuries. Delivered by acclaimed Professor Elizabeth A. Murray of Mount St. Joseph University, a forensic anthropologist with nearly 30 years of experience in the field, the lectures will discuss cutting-edge advancements in science and technology and how they are applied to investigations.

Ball Stores was the cornerstone of downtown Muncie from the grand opening in November 1934, until the last light was turned off in August 1986. Learn about the history of the store, and plan to share your memories.

Mrs. Johnson will teach simplified techniques for creating a beautiful watercolor masterpiece from start to finish. Her professional experience enables her to teach novices as well as advanced painters in the same setting. You’ll  learn something new in each session, no matter your skill level. A suggested supply list will be provided upon enrollment. Each class is limited to 15 participants. 

What really happened the night of December 23, 1888, in the town of Arles? What was Van Gogh's state of mind? No one has been clear on the details until now. Bernadette Murphy, a researcher living in Provence, has spent five years piecing together a meticulous picture of his life.  In this PBS documentary, she uncovers evidence and pieces together a detailed timeline leading up to the night of the event, explaining the driving force behind the story that dominates art history.

Smedley Butler was a United States Marine Corps major general, the highest rank authorized at that time. At his death, he was the most decorated Marine in the U.S. Mr. Gill will discuss the interesting facts surrounding Butler’s life including why Herbert Hoover wanted to court-martial this two-time Medal of Honor recipient. 

Founded in 2004, the Yorktown-Mt. Pleasant Township Historical Alliance provides a physical destination for local history and artifacts to be displayed and enjoyed by the community. The museum contains vintage advertising, period clothing, tools, household items, business and organization records, photos, and much more.
