Muncie Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Competition

Muncie Symphony holds annual competition for young musicians in the region. Winners are selected in two divisions: junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12). Both division winners receive cash prizes and are offered performance opportunity with the MSO. The competition allows MSO to discover and showcase young rising talents. It also serves as encouragement and inspiration for any school age children who are learning an instrument to continue their practice.
Public is admitted free of charge to observe the competition. Concert étiquette is required, but you can leave/enter quietly during the competition in between the performances.

Participants will go through simulation activities related to the experiences of various cultural and identity groups.

Zombie Media and Apocalyptic Preparedness

Eric King Watts will examine how this genre is preoccupied with "end-of-days" fantasies that feed the motives of extreme preparedness groups. In particular, the talk will focus on "Zombie Preppers," a docudrama produced and aired on Discovery Channel as an example of how the genre composes a zombie outbreak as plausible. Lastly, the talk speculates on the potential communicative impacts brought about by repetitive exposure and intense consumption of the genre.

Frida Kahlo of the Guerrilla Girls will speak about discrimination in the art world.
Since 1985 the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous group of gorilla-masked activists, have been battling sexism and racism in art, politics, film, and popular culture. They use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose discrimination and corruption.
