“Sarah Shaffer: Life in Plastic”

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 2, 2016 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Sarah Shaffer. The show titled “Life in Plastic” explores society’s monumental impact through the form of our tiniest role models.Beyond objectification and the weight of the world's expectations, creating this body of work was a very personal journey for Sarah. She created these paintings using one of her daughter's dolls as a model with the color palette of her childhood memory. These pieces embody her own path to define her self-image and the desire to not pass along physical insecurities to future generations.

Each piece is a depiction of a doll, focusing on a portion of the body and recreated on a large scale. This collection of acrylic paintings portrays the objectification and unrealistic expectations placed upon women. We perpetuate these damaging standards in our interactions with others and within ourselves. The titles are inspired by comments made to or about women in judgement of their appearance, their choices, and their actions.

The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of June.

Sarah, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone as well as a commissioned artist, is a native of Indiana, grew up in Fort Wayne with A love of art from an early age. Sarah is a graduate of Ball State University’s School of Art, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in metalsmithing earned in 2007. Her senior show titled "Playtime's Over," explored women's issues by combining Barbie dolls with precious metal to create conceptual jewelry.

Nearly 10 years after Sarah's senior project, she has revisited Barbie and some of the corresponding themes of objectification and unrealistic expectations through the form of painting rather than jewelry. In the near decade that has passed, Sarah has become a mother and wishes to confront these themes for the betterment of the next generation.

“Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Cornerstone Park”

Cornerstone Center for the Arts and the City of Muncie are excited to announce a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Cornerstone Park on Thursday, June 2 at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will feature live demonstrations from students and instructors of Cornerstone Center for the Arts and remarks from Mayor Dennis Tyler, Jeff Robinson of Cornerstone, and Ron Spangler of Community Enhancement Projects. At the conclusion of the ceremony, guests are invited to Cornerstone for light refreshments and the opening of the art show “Life in Plastic” in Cornerstone's Art Gallery on the second floor until 7:30pm.

Cornerstone Park sits at 101 S. Madison St. at the former site of Holiday Cleaners. The development of the park was made possible through partnerships with the Ball Brothers Foundation, the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, the George and Frances Ball Foundation, Community Enhancement Projects, the Zeigler Foundation, the Muncie Sanitary District, the Muncie Redevelopment Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler. The park was created as a gateway to Downtown Muncie and will offer new outdoor opportunities for the surrounding businesses and organizations.

Cornerstone Park features lush landscaping and ornamental foliage from Jay-Crew Landscape and is home to the new public art piece titled EXTESS by PROJECTiONE. Cornerstone plans to utilize the new park for upcoming summer classes, workshops, and events.

“Fellini’s 8 ½”

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, in collaboration with The Fickle Peach, presents After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in June. Come enjoy the gallery exhibits from 5-8pm, and join us afterwards at dusk for great cult and art film classics!

Films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles Street at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area.

We will feature great music by local artist, Joan Hamilton. She is well-known in the Muncie area as a singer-songwriter. Come to Grace Episcopal Church at the corner of Madison St. and Adams St. for a great night of music. Also appearing is Yorktown High School student Iris Chalk. Art will be on display beginning at 5pm, and all other events will begin at 7pm. There will be an old-fashioned bake sale throughout the evening.

“Summer Invitational”

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, June 2nd from 5 – 8 pm with an opening reception for the gallery’s third annual Summer Invitational. The exhibit will feature both 2D and 3D work by several area artists who will be on hand to engage with viewers. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

What started as a rare event in the exhibition schedule at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. is back for its third year. The Summer Invitational is designed to introduce our patrons to some of the best new work our region has to offer by exclusively exhibiting artists who are not currently represented by GFAF. This refreshing shift in the gallery’s routine programming brings together artists from throughout Central Indiana and features oil painting, sculpture, furniture, photography, watercolor, and jewelry. The exhibit will be on view for two months through the end of July, offering visitors an extended opportunity to experience fresh, new art from beyond the Muncie scene.

Exhibitors include Hannah Barnes, Jasmine D’Angelo, Suzanne Dittenber, Holly Lay, Tim Miller, and Noelle Weigand.

The Living Room will be featuring the work of artist Billy Riggs for June’s First Thursday celebration. Riggs is known for his artworks that are mostly created with spray paint. The show will feature nature scenes, futuristic pieces, comic book characters, and other mixed media works.

“CritChat: Unknown Territory”
For the past year, Muncie Makes Lab has been home to CritChat, a free, community meet-up developed and facilitated by artists Holly Lay and Braydee Euliss. This monthly gathering invites local artists of all kinds to participate in conversation about their own work and the work of others. Painters, photographers, sculptors, and makers alike are encouraged to bring completed work, work-in-progress, and even unrealized ideas with the sole intention of sharing. By enabling dialogue, promoting collaboration, and providing critical feedback, the group hopes to build community and support for emerging area artists.

The month of June marks CritChat’s one-year-anniversary. The group will celebrate with an opening reception for CritChat: Unknown Territory at Muncie Makes Lab on First Thursday, June 2nd, 5 – 9 PM. This exhibit explores a variety of media including photography, assemblage, installation, as well as video and sound manipulation performance with a focus on new techniques and subject matter. Featured in the exhibit are artists Spencer Davis, Kara Clark DuQuette, Michael DuQuette, Dave Franklin, Holly Lay, Rochelle Martin, and Jannell Summers.

Artists will be present and guests are encouraged to ask questions throughout the evening. Beginning at 8 PM, the exhibiting artists will introduce themselves and engage attendees in a sample CritChat experience, leading artists and viewers alike through the process of providing informed, critical feedback on select pieces featured in the exhibit. DJ JANNELL will provide music, and light refreshments will be served.

Students from the Urban Planning Department, led by Prof. Lisa Dunaway, will be holding an open house to present their Public Art Master Plan, and will invite feedback from the public. The project is the result of an immersive learning course at Ball State University. Light refreshments will be served.

Dave Rowe: Improbable Metropolis - Wood, nails, glue, gravel, wire, 2014

PlySpace Resident Fellow, artist Dave Rowe, will hold an open studio at Madjax on Friday, July 13th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.  PlySpace studios are located on the second floor of the Madjax building.

Visitors are invited to learn more about PlySpace, check out the PlySpace studios, and explore the work Dave has created while in residence this summer.  At 6:00 PM, the artist will discuss his work and his residency experience in an informal artist talk. Light refreshments will be served.

Dave Rowe is a sculptor, educator, and fabricator. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Sculptural Practices at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and holds a BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign and an MFA from Indiana University Bloomington.

"Medicine?" Interactive sculpture by PlySpace Resident Sydney Pursel

Muncie Arts and Culture Council will present a pop-up, one-night-only exhibition of new multimedia and sculpture artwork by PlySpace artists-in-residence Sarah Trad and Sydney Pursel. The exhibition titled Threads explores concurrent themes in the artists’ work related to personal heritage and representation. The exhibition will be held on First Thursday, December 5th, from 5-8 PM in the PlySpace Gallery. Both artists will be present throughout the evening and share brief remarks about their work at 7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Since their arrival in early November, both Trad and Pursel have completed collaborative, community-based arts projects in the city of Muncie while also working on their own artwork in the PlySpace Studios in Madjax. Trad collaborated with both Ball State University School of Art and the Islamic Center of Muncie to offer workshops on nuno felting in the month of November. Pursel collaborated with Minnetrista and The Delaware County Historical Society to offer an iteration of The Feast, an educational performance where she created handmade plates and place settings that celebrate the many Native American tribes of the United States. Both artists were also joined by visiting artist Toby Kaufmann-Buhler for Heritage in Practice, a panel discussion at Ball State University School of Art on November 14th. The event, moderated by Tania Said, Director of Education at the David Owsley Museum of Art, explored topics of heritage and cultural expression in artwork.

Threads will be the culmination of work created by the artists during their residency experience. The two-person exhibition will examine themes of decolonization and representation of both Indigenous Native American and Middle Eastern cultures as they pertain to each artist’s specific family life. Using traditional clothing, textile, and pattern design and practice, among other media, each artist will explore how inherited trauma such as mental illness and addiction causes rifts in future generations. Each artist hopes to use their work as a window to understanding the position of Native American and Middle Eastern cultural identities outside of their problematic historical representations.  

Sydney Pursel (Kansas City, MS) is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in interactive, socially engaged, and performance art. Through art she explores personal identity drawing from her Indigenous and Irish Catholic roots and links identity struggles with contemporary Indigenous issues. Her work has been shown at public parks, universities, galleries, and alternative spaces across the U.S. and Canada. Pursel received her MFA in Expanded Media at the University of Kansas and her BFA in Painting from the University of Missouri. She was the first recipient of the Ucross Fellowship for Native American Visual Artists, received the Harpo Foundation Native American Residency Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and was selected for the Indigenous Arts Initiative Residency program through the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission. Pursel is an enrolled member of the Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.

Sarah Trad (Philadelphia, PA) is a video artist and curator who explores the relationship between subjective and objective emotionality, navigating daily life and relationships while faced with mental illness and breaking down stereotypes of gender and narrative. Her work also highlights how mental illness and coming from marginalized backgrounds intersects with internal emotional worlds. Sarah has participated in other residencies, such as the 77Art Residency in Rutland, Vermont and is a recipient of the Carol N. Schmuckler Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film. Sarah’s work has been shown at The Warehouse Gallery (Syracuse, NY), Kitchen Table Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Gravy Studio and Gallery (Philadelphia, PA) and the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY). She is currently part of the Philadelphia artist-run gallery, Little Berlin.

Join PlySpace (plyspace.org) and Ball State University School of Art for the visiting artist lecture for PlySpace Resident Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado. Diacon-Furtado will speak about his work and answer questions about his practice and time spent in Muncie at the PlySpace Residency, a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (munciearts.org). 

This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM-7PM via Ball State School of Art Live (https://sites.bsu.edu/artlive/). A live Q&A will follow the lecture. Attendees can view the lecture for free. 

Over the last 3 weeks, Diacon-Furtado has worked with 2D Foundation students at Ball State University School of Art in a virtual collaboration. Our Patterns, a project spanning 6 separate classes and including over 100 student participants who developed pattern-based works to create a community “quilt” of patterns, visible on Instagram (@ourpatterns_Muncie). The public is encouraged to follow the progress of this project online, which will culminate in a projected exhibition on the exterior of the PlySpace building on First Thursday, November 5th.

Diacon-Furtado is an internationally recognized and award-winning Brazilian and American artist and designer who has exhibited globally in venues including the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture. His design work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times and Dwell magazine, and he is a founding partner of the New Orleans based arts-focused design studio opossum (itsopossumtime.com).

Gordy Fine Art & Framing presents Flophouses, Monkeys and Masks: Prints by David Johnson: Gordy Fine Art and Framing will celebrate an exhibition and sale of prints by David Johnson from 5-8 pm. Johnson is well known for his direct and often humorous observations of humans and animals. He taught drawing and printmaking at Ball State University for 33 years. He is now retired and continues to live in Muncie. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.  The artist will be on hand to engage with visitors. At 6:15 the artist will give a brief presentation about his work and answer questions. 

“My prints derive from life; the town I live in and the people I see,” says Johnson. “I love drawing… I think of it as a wonderful basic human activity, like singing. I find etchings and woodcuts are ways to extend my drawings. I can take the best information from each of my drawings and combine the more successful elements, increase the scale, experiment with color, and transform the whole thing into ink. I appreciate the heightened impact Relief Prints impart to the original drawing… what may have been indefinite graphite scribbles turns into definite black lines and shapes. The show will be on view with works for sale through November 26.

Our Artist of the Month for the Muncie Artists Guild for November 2022 is Deborah Brown. Deborah is a Muncie native. She completed her graduate and MA degrees at Ball State University, as well as a certification in Gifted Education. Before retiring, she taught school in southern Indiana, Georgia, Florida, then once again in Indiana. After retiring, she pursued her lifelong love of art, attending several workshops, some of which were in Maine, Nantucket, and southern Indiana (New Harmony). Some of the workshops were taught by accomplished artists such as Thomas Dunlay, Pam Newell, Susie Rachels, Beth Schwier, Jim Faulkner, and Terry Armstrong. Besides painting, Deborah enjoys spending time with her family (especially her grandchildren!) and traveling to various parts of the country gathering inspiration from nature and God's handiwork. One of her favorite quotes is, "You are never too old to become what you might have been."

The Muncie Makers Market is happy to be a part of Muncie’s First Thursday community events, thanks to an invitation to take over the sidewalks in front of Muncie Map Co. in Downtown Muncie! This is a popular local monthly tradition, going years back, with all sorts of vendors, artists, and entertainers set up throughout Downtown Muncie. It’s a casual, relaxed evening outdoors, and we help to bring folks to the area. We’ve been getting a great turn out! 

Assuming good weather, the Muncie Makers Market will set up on the sidewalks by the corner of Walnut and Adams Streets for the November 2022 First Thursday. A former Market Vendor who now has their own shop, Muncie Map Co. at 111 East Adams Street, hosts us on their sidewalk. This is right next to Toys Forever Models & Hobbies at 300 South Walnut Street, and lots of great shops, bars, and restaurants. The Muncie Makers Market is a registered farmers market featuring handmade creations, homemade foods, and locally grown produce! We will be open ‪to the public from 5-8p. All of our local Growers and Makers hope you come see us and enjoy a lovely Autumn evening with your community!

Cornerstone Center for the Arts

Artists participating in the First Thursday, Cornerstone Center for the Arts new monthly arts show, will be held in the Great Room on the second floor of the building at 520 E. Main Street on February 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Resident Artist Debra Gindhart Dragoo coordinated the initial First Thursday this year on January 5 which drew 20 artists pop-up booths (including several artists on Cornerstone’s staff) and 75 guests. In addition, a Cornerstone featured artist displays multiple works in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery next to the Great Room. This month’s featured artist is Anwar Ruhma Frazier whose a local acrylic and tattoo artist whose premier gallery show was hosted last year at in the Gallery. 

Local musicians will provide accompaniment. Community members are encouraged to call organizer Gindhart Dragoo at Cornerstone at 765-281-9503 EXT. 150. Gindhart Dragoo says “We believe it is important to encourage the creative paths of our artists, we also celebrate the youth who are creative artists in the community.“

Spots for pop-up artists are $10 per spot and extra tables are $5 each. Displaying Cornerstone staff artists include Nick Martin, Allen Leberteux, Leon and Laura Crosby, Eugene Boyd, Chaney Youngblood, Olivia Morrow, Shirley Jean Rice, and Ashton Baker.

Cornerstone offers opportunities for creative expression for all with visual arts, dance, music, and martial arts classes. Cornerstone also provides community and rental spaces in a historic setting.  Thousands of area residents attend proms, wedding, corporate conferences and civic events at Cornerstone each year. Kimberly and Scott Anderson are beloved artists in our area, making art and teaching art students here for over 25 years.  Gordy has represented their work for over 20 years and we are proud to highlight them in a new exhibit on Thursday February 2, 5 – 8 pm. Conjure, Combine, Continue implies the dedication and shear persistence of their artistic practice with works they have produced throughout their careers.  They will be on hand during the evening to engage with viewers and answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. Kim Anderson is a Junior High Art Teacher at Jay County Schools.  She has a studio and kilns in Hartford City, Indiana, where she lives. Her art considers the intricacies of life and the environment. “I am influenced by two spheres of thought: the physical sciences and the human psyche. I find that science considers facts, and the psyche discloses the mysteries of life. I am not searching for truth, but for a secret.”

Scott Anderson is a Professor of Painting at Ball State University since 1995 and has exhibited professionally for the past 30 years. “My paintings attempt to show idea systems in conflict through a mixture of styles, surfaces, symbols, appropriated images, and forms that have been assembled into a contrasting visual stew.”

The exhibit will be on view with works for sale in the gallery and at gordyframing.com through March 11, 2023.

Our Artist of the Month for the Muncie Artists Guild for February 2023 is Jennifer "Jennie" Irving. 

Jennifer Irving is a Delaware County resident. She started working in watercolor and acrylic painting in the past few years after retiring from her career in Massage Therapy. She has always enjoyed working with her hands and creating. For her 50th birthday, she decided to gift herself a watercolor course and supplies with local artist Cindy Norrick-Turner. Jennie found she really enjoyed the merging of the colors and results which could arise.  She loves working in a non-traditional style and likes alcohol inks and yupo paper for their magical movement and vibrancy. She continued to take various classes and explored mediums and techniques. 

Previous avenues of expression have included weaving, stained glass and jewelry making. She has a love of color and textures. An avid gardener, Jennie notices the shadows and structure in nature and finds joy and solace in natural flowing designs."

The comprehension of envisaging the design discipline (architecture included) as a vigorous energy intends to spotlight the value of ‘construction’ -the tangible and/or the intellectual. That vigorous energy looks for architectures like processes of thinking and making, as well as it questions how those processes work in the global scenario of today.

Pre-thesis inquiry and two images inspired the ephemeral-structures and conceptualizations exhibited, challenging some presumed, prescriptive notions such as suppleness and physicality among others, and their [possible] translations in the architectural world.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! But don’t think it’s a yard sale like you’ve ever been to before! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Fall 2023 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, October 5th!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Fall 2023 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2023  ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 5th, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. To this goal, all YART Art will be priced below $40! YART works to enable local creative entrepreneurs and to improve the Muncie economy. Shop local, support independents, enjoy your town! 

The last YART featured over 150 Artists! Each YART Artist will be present throughout YART to meet the public, discuss their Art, handle sales personally, and some Artists will be making Art LIVE at YART! This is a great opportunity to enjoy your family interacting with local culture in a dynamic, lively, and relaxed atmosphere.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company is proud to highlight the art of graphic artist John Morris during the First Thursday Gallery Walk - TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE Edition. The artist will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. At 6:15, John will speak about his work and his process. 

John Morris’s art builds a conversation between the digital world and the actual world. His works are built in stages by first designing digital collages from comic book images and then meticulously recreating them as real collages with physical clippings. When that is complete, he then translates the composition into its final iteration using Perler Beads. This process mimics the action of flattening a digital file and highlights the value Morris places on manual labor in the digital age through the labor-intensive use of beads,

The exhibit will remain on view through April 27.
