Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, June 6 for the opening reception of Sparking Nostalgia Through Pop Culture, an art exhibition by Will Britton Jr. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with June’s First Thursday events.

Sparking Nostalgia Through Pop Culture is a collection of pop culture icons. From the obscure to the more commonly known, Britton’s work brings forth nostalgia from childhood favorites. The work invokes those things that would get you up early on Saturday with a big bowl of cereal eager to turn on cartoons. Those things that when you see them, you remember time, place, taste, and smell. Britton’s work seeks to transport viewers back to the joy of childhood.

Will Britton Jr. was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1997 and then went on to Vincennes University where he studied Fine Arts until he transferred to The Art Academy of Cincinnati. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with his specialty being printmaking. He has worked steadily making the art he loves while also working in social services. He lives in Muncie with his wife, children, an old dog and a bossy cat.  His everyday life consists of wrangling chaos and disorder, making items for local markets and a little D & D as time permits.

The Delaware County Historical Society presents “Muncie Mystery” from 5-7:30pm.

A serious (and pretend) crime has been committed in Downtown Muncie! We are calling on all citizen sleuths to participate in a real-life Clue game as part of the First Thursday festivities on June 6.

Between 5 and 6:30 pm, visit ten participating downtown businesses for clues about suspects and weapons. At each location, you will have the chance to answer a Muncie trivia question to learn more about our city, complements of the Delaware County Historical Society.

The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Muncie Civic Theatre at 7:00 pm. Sleuths who correctly identify the perpetrator and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including an overnight stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Muncie at Horizon Convention Center, Muncie Civic Theatre tickets, a silver crystal pendant from Pazols Jewelers, and more! (Must be present to win.)

The opening reception for Life in Plastic, featuring artwork by Sarah Shaffer will take place at Elm Street Brewing Co on Thursday, June 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The opening of Life in Plastic will take place in conjunction with First Thursday’s events.

The smallest things can have the biggest impact. Our childhoods shape us, create us, and define who we will become. In the collection titled, "Life in Plastic," Sarah Shaffer has explored society's monumental impact through the form of its tiniest role models. Each piece is a depiction of a doll, focusing only on a portion of the body and recreated in a large scale. This collection of acrylic paintings portrays the objectification of and unrealistic expectations placed upon women.

Sarah Shaffer is a native of Indiana, growing up in Fort Wayne with a love of art from an early age. Sarah is a graduate of Ball State University's Art Department, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing earned in 2007. Sarah lives with her husband and daughter in Muncie, Indiana, and works at Cornerstone Center for the Arts as the Education and Marketing Coordinator as well as a visual arts instructor.

The opening reception of Life in Plastic will include live music by local artist Caleb Ferguson. After attending the reception, Elm Street Brewing Co invites you to stick around, order dinner and a beer, and enjoy the relaxed family friendly atmosphere. The Peterson and Dunn Project will perform following the conclusion of the opening reception. Life in Plastic will be on display, with work for sale throughout the month of June.

Muncie Downtown Development will host outdoor “Afterhours Art Reels” following the First Thursday Gallery Walks, June-September.  Films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles St. at dusk.  Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests 21 and up. June’s movie is Baby Driver from director Edgar Wright.

Local social commentary artist Debra Gindhart will feature two assemblage pieces titled TOOLS 4 SCHOOLS. Debra believes that guns have no place in our schools. We must reduce the possibility of any gunfire in schools, rather than concentrating on ways to keep all guns off school property. Ensuring the safety of children and school employees, school administrators should focus on measures that will create safe and supportive learning environments for students, faculty, and staff. 

Debra Gindhart will also feature wearable art, painted clothing, and painted handbags. There will be an opening reception where you can meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments from 5-8pm. Madjax, 2nd floor.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will open Natural Influences: Two Hoosiers, Nature, and Their Art. From topographically inspired jewelry by Lisa Walsh to floral designed silks by Carrie Wright, the influence of nature will be celebrated during June’s First Thursday on June 6, from 5:00 to 8:00. Carrie Wright, a Muncie silk painter, will give a short talk at 6:15. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. The exhibition will remain on view with works for sale throughout the summer.

Carrie Wright, a Muncie silk painter and newly minted Indiana Artisan, will be sharing her beautiful pieces of wearable art. Wright gives specific attention to several details, such as: where the design elements are likely to fall on the body when the scarf is worn; an appropriate color pallet within the design with careful consideration for the occasion or outfit for which the scarf might be worn; a balanced combination of floral and graphic elements maintaining visual tension and interest. Wright’s creativity is nurtured by combining the clean design disciplines of the Japanese kimono textile creators and the forward-thinking creativity of European designers.

“I was born and raised amid the fields in northern Delaware County,” says Wright. “I’ve always been inspired by the beauty of Indiana landscapes, fields that stretch to the horizons of both the rising and setting sun. Much of my work is influenced by the flora of the area combined in some way with a bold graphic design element to help balance the piece and prohibit it from becoming flowery or fussy.”

Lisa Walsh, a jewelry designer from Lafayette, will be showcasing pieces from her Topography Series. Walsh uses enamels and mixed metals to portray accurate contour lines from topographical maps. Conceptualized in 2015, this series has received four consecutive Arts in the Parks grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. The Topography Series includes work featuring Clifty Falls and Spring Mill State Park in southern Indiana, and recently expanded to include areas of Shenandoah National Park where Walsh was artist-in-residence in 2018.

Walsh’s influence is a “fascination with topographical maps which I have had since studying fire science many years ago, but hadn't incorporated them into my work until relatively recently.  Topography and jewelry are such an unusual pairing that it often opens discussions that lead into important land and conservation issues,” she says.  “Jewelry is the ultimate traveling art, and as such, a great medium for encouraging dialogue between people.”

Joan is a local favorite guitar and keyboard performer with deep roots in the Muncie and Indy music scene. There will be CD' for sale. This is a great way to start the summer music season.

Fixer Upper
Erica Collins’ 6th grade Northside Middle School math class worked with Tom Collins from the BSU Department of Architecture on an documentation and redesign project for a single room in which the students took physical measurements, drew scale drawings, learned about architectural drawing conventions, proposed renovations to the room, and calculated the renovation costs for materials and labor. The results of the 6-week project were shown at the MCS Celebrate Excellence Show in May.

Solar Decathlon Design Challenge
A Spring 2019 architecture design studio taught by Tom Collins with the assistance of Walter Grondzik and Tarek Mahfouz that participated in the US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. Two collaborative student-led teams developed net-zero energy ready housing proposals for sites in historic districts adjacent to downtown Muncie with community partners ecoREHAB and Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity.

Reimagining Memorial & Hoyt
A Summer 2019 architecture design studio/workshop co-taught by Pam Harwood and Tom Collins focused on reimagining, redeveloping, and reusing underutilized property in Muncie’s Southwestern neighborhoods to support neighborhood revitalization efforts to improve access to food, healthcare, housing, and transportation. The class is working with Building Better Neighborhoods and the 8 Twelve Coalition on this community design immersive learning project.

This screening focuses on 4 video and film works about sculptural markings in urban spaces, memory, and place. Screening time: 50min, followed by group discussion and dialogue. This event is free and open to the public, and no expertise or previous experience with public art is necessary! The screening will be an informal and fun event with light refreshments, though may not be engageing for children under 14.

We will show a 10 min excerpt of this film, with the opportunity to watch entire documentary after the main program is over.
The film follows the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude as they work with the community to build a 24 mile fence of white fabric over the hills of California disappearing into the Pacific. The excerpt depicts the struggle between the artists and the state bureaucracy in the process of approving and erecting the fence, giving a glimpse into the multi-layered and complicated process of approving and installing a large-scale public art work.

Turbo Sculpture

Turbo Sculpture is a video essay which examines the emergence of a new kind of public art in the former-Yougoslav republics as a response to post-war search for a new national identity. Domanovic’s work offers an international perspective on monumentality and public art.

Buried and Breaking Away

Breaking Away was a 1979 film by Peter Yates, filmed in Bloomington, Indiana. In 2014, Bill Morrison buried the reel of the damaged 35mm film print in Bloomington for two months, allowing the physical and chemical elements to distort and alter the emulsion. Upon unearthing, cleaning and screening the print, an abstracted moving image revealed itself. Bill Morrison’s Buried and Breaking Away is a meditation on the physical effects of Indiana’s geology and place on one of its most beloved visual and cultural representation.

The Muncie Arts & Culture Council (MACC) presents esteemed experimental filmmaker, Latham Zearfoss, in the second screening event by That One Microcinema. Immediately following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the artist. Zearfoss’ screening will take place on November 23rd, 2019 from 7-9:30 p.m. in the PlySpace Gallery at 608 East Main Street. Tickets to this screening are $5.00 ($4.00 for students and MACC members). 

That One Microcinema is a recurring program of the Muncie Arts & Culture Council in partnership with a Ball State University immersive learning course. That One Microcinema is a screening series focused on works by emerging and established experimental moving image artists that complements That One Film Festival in advancing the art form as well as regional understanding an appreciation of the medium. This event is the final screening of the 2019 fall season and will be followed by That One Film Festival in spring 2020 on Friday, April 10th and Saturday, April 11th.

Latham Zearfoss is a Chicago-based media artist, whose films have been screened globally at festivals and artistic events such as: The 9th Shanghai Biennale, The NY Queer Experimental Film Festival, Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, and the Boston Underground Film Festival. Their films focus on self-identity and otherness. Zearfoss won Best Experimental Film in 2011 at Humboldt Film Festival in Arcata, California for their film, I Give You Life.

That One Film Festival Celebrates Experimental Filmmakers During Two-Day Event

This September 11th and 12th marks the return of That One Film Festival, Muncie’s own biennial experimental film festival. The two-day event will be a free livestreaming event available online where viewers can participate in the livestream content.

The event is produced by students in an immersive learning course at the Ball State University School of Art, with artistic directors Associate Professor Maura Jasper and Assistant Professor Kristin Reeves, in partnership with the Muncie Arts and Culture Council.

That One Film Festival celebrates the work of moving image artists from around the globe. The festival specializes in experimental, no/low budget, and avant-garde film and video art. This year, more than 275 films were submitted to That One for consideration. Of those submissions, 36 individual films have been selected for this year’s program, in addition to screenings of work by the festival’s two jurors, Karissa Hahn and Laura Parnes, and a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris.

This event is rated PG-13 for strong language, and viewer discretion is advised. All events are Eastern Standard Time.

The Opening Night stream begins at 5:45 PM on Friday, September 11th with an introduction by festival Master of Ceremonies Dennis Everette, and Muncie Arts and Culture Council Executive Director Erin Williams. The program will begin at 6:00 PM with a selection of work by Karissa Hahn, PlySpace Virtual Resident and co-juror at this year’s festival, followed by two one-hour programs. The screenings will end at 9:15 PM, after which there will be a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris. The event will conclude at 10:00 PM. The festival will continue on Saturday, Sept. 12. The event is produced by students in an immersive learning course at the Ball State University School of Art, with artistic directors Associate Professor Maura Jasper and Assistant Professor Kristin Reeves, in partnership with the Muncie Arts and Culture Council.

Join PlySpace (plyspace.org) and Ball State University School of Art for the visiting artist lecture for PlySpace Resident Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado. Diacon-Furtado will speak about his work and answer questions about his practice and time spent in Muncie at the PlySpace Residency, a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (munciearts.org). 

This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM-7PM via Ball State School of Art Live (https://sites.bsu.edu/artlive/). A live Q&A will follow the lecture. Attendees can view the lecture for free. 

Over the last 3 weeks, Diacon-Furtado has worked with 2D Foundation students at Ball State University School of Art in a virtual collaboration. Our Patterns, a project spanning 6 separate classes and including over 100 student participants who developed pattern-based works to create a community “quilt” of patterns, visible on Instagram (@ourpatterns_Muncie). The public is encouraged to follow the progress of this project online, which will culminate in a projected exhibition on the exterior of the PlySpace building on First Thursday, November 5th.

Diacon-Furtado is an internationally recognized and award-winning Brazilian and American artist and designer who has exhibited globally in venues including the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture. His design work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times and Dwell magazine, and he is a founding partner of the New Orleans based arts-focused design studio opossum (itsopossumtime.com).

PlySpace is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council in collaboration with Ball State University School of Art and Sustainable Muncie Corporation, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

Art Reels:
Also join us for After Hours Art Reels, presented by The Fickle Peach. Muncie Downtown Development Partnership will host outdoor After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in June–September. Films will be projected onto the Northwest Bank wall on Charles St at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E Charles St for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area. June’s film will be Stand by Me.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing is honored to celebrate the 5th anniversary of On the Mark, For the City, the colorful mural on the Mark III Tap Room, with an exhibition and sale of artworks by the four artists who planned, designed, and painted that mural.  The opening party for this exhibition will be First Thursday, June 2 from 5 to 8 pm with an artists’ talk by Faith Kellermeyer and Jannell Summers at 6:15.

Following the tragic events at the Orlando Pulse Nightclub in 2016, JoAnna Darda, Braydee Euliss, Faith Kellermeyer, and Jannell Summers were inspired to work hand-in-hand to create a piece of public art that would illustrate Muncie’s acceptance of and support for people of all backgrounds.  These four women artists raised the funds, figured out the logistics, designed and painted the mural. Throughout the process they invited the community to help in the creation of the mural.

Making Their Mark looks at each of these women as artists.  JoAnna, a textile artist, focuses on color, texture, and function. Braydee is a visual artist and curator that explores human relationships with objects, spaces, and institutions. Faith, a painter, focuses on narratives that embrace universal experiences. Jannell works in various mediums that blend 70s color and design with modern day attitudes. 

The show will be on view with works for sale through August 26. 10% of all sales of artworks will go to support Muncie OUTreach and its mission to provide an accepting environment to enhance the personal growth of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth in the Delaware County area.

The Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for June 2022 is Karen Fisher. Her artwork will be showing at: Northwest Bank, Old National Bank, Parlour Salon, Rosebud Coffee House, and Vera Mae's Bistro.

Karen is the owner of Art Mart as well as a member of Muncie Artist Guild and former president. Currently she is the chair of the Susie Burns Memorial Scholarship Committee and Events Committee chair. She is also a member of the Mayor’s Public Arts Committee, NAMTA, and iAMart, an international organization of Independent Art Materials Retailers. 

Karen earned her Master’s degrees in education from Ball State University in 1990 and purchased Art Mart along with her husband Paul in 2003. Karen has taught art classes to many young students and adults through the years. She still interacts with many of those same folks, with their children, and some of their grandchildren. She does ArtCamp in the summertime and often goes to family art festivals in the area to demonstrate one process or another. She taught classes at Cornerstone Center for the Arts for several years. 

As an artist, she likes to draw and paint. Recently she began concentrating on learning pastel painting. She is an avid collector of many things and enjoys incorporating her collections into her artwork. She currently lives in a 125-year-old home downtown, and appreciates the artistic quality that can be found in old homes.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 2nd!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 2nd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana.

Ahead of its nationwide theatrical release, Muncie will be one of 20 cities (and the only in Indiana) to early screen The First Step, a 90-minute documentary film that follows political commentator Van Jones and the bipartisan coalition who fought to pass landmark criminal justice reform in 2018 (The First Step Act), which has allowed more than 20,000 people to come home from federal prisons. The first screening opened in late-February in New York City and will conclude in May in Virginia.  

Immediately following the Muncie screening on March 18th at Muncie Civic Theatre, The Facing Project co-founder and president, J.R. Jamison, will moderate an interactive local panel discussion on the themes of the film that include addiction, recovery, reentry, and criminal justice reform. 

Local panelists will include:

This week for our Liberation Flick we’ll be learning about Venezuela and why it has been a primary target of the imperialist system.

We’ll be screening the documentary ‘The Revolution will not be Televised’ which covers the attempted coup and kidnapping of Hugo Chavez in 2002. This documentary is comprised entirely of footage from the coup itself captured by journalists who had been filming a profile on Chavez before the attempted coup broke out.
