Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for the opening reception of Street Vibe by local artist Leon Crosby. The reception will take place in the newly renovated Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in conjunction with August’s First Thursday events.

Taking inspiration from mural art around the world, this collection aims to hit the multiple different styles that can encompass street art from surrealism, graffiti, fantasy art, watercolor and classical styles. These styles and more will be evident in Crosby’s unique show Street Vibe.

Leon Crosby is a local artist, teacher, and street artist. Street Vibe will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of August. Muncie Downtown Development in partnership with The Fickle Peach, presents After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks. Come enjoy the gallery exhibits from 5-8pm, and join us afterwards at dusk for these great film classics!

August’s film will be “The Blues Brothers” featuring a special guest appearance!  Come ready to shake your tail feather!

Films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles Street at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area.

During August's First Thursday, Debra is showcasing her recycle chic necklaces and earrings directly from the artist's private collection vault. Each designer set is $40 and up. If you have ever wanted to wear what she wore, this is your chance.

The evening celebration will kick off at 4pm with a free Zumba class. At 5pm there will be food trucks and beer tents. At 6:30pm, the Carl Storie Band will perform.

The Muncie Arts and Culture Council and PlySpace, an artist-in-residence program based in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District in downtown Muncie, Indiana, are excited to announce the second Summer Term Resident Artist, Kacie Lyn Martinez. Martinez is a participatory fiber artist based in Brooklyn, New York whose work generates contemporary weaving projects which combine therapeutic, meditative practice with traditional weaving methods. While in residence at PlySpace throughout the month of August, Martinez will present a public weaving project,

“the hopes we wear on our backs”, at Canan Commons. The launch of this project will coincide with the First Thursday in August. She will also work directly with the YWCA of Muncie and Muncie OUTreach as community collaborative project partners to explore the weaving process as a catalyst for healing, community cohesion, and home-making.

The participatory public art project titled “the hopes we wear on our backs” explores the process of collectively envisioning Muncie’s future. Held at the west end of Canan Commons through the month of August, “the hopes we wear on our backs” invites Muncie residents to write out their hopes for the city on strips of recycled clothing which will then be woven by Martinez and interested participants into a temporary public artwork installed at the Canan Commons grates. The project is inspired by a lack of public spaces for dialogue as well as negative news cycles which sensationalize trauma and ignore daily beauty in our communities. The project aims to engage with various Muncie communities by using participatory fiber arts to make physical the process of collective dreaming.

Martinez will begin actively working on the public installation on First Thursday, August 2nd, from 5-8 PM. She will be on site to answer questions about the project and her process, and the public is invited to participate by sharing their hopes and dreams for Muncie in person. She will continue the project by facilitating public participation each following Saturday throughout the month of August from 11 AM to 2 PM. Martinez will also be on site Saturday, August 4th from 6-8 PM prior to Downtown Development’s Moonlight Movie screening of “Wonder Woman” at Canan Commons. The public can also participate at any time by adding to the supply of recycled clothing strips and writing their hopes on the strips for Martinez to weave during her next public workday. Full instructions on how to participate will be available at the Canan Commons artwork site and on www.plyspace.org.

The School of Art is pleased to continue its summer exhibition to present BEGINNINGS 2018: EXTENDED, a Student Art Exhibition in the Atrium Gallery. It remains on display until Tuesday, September 18 with a closing reception from 4-6 pm. The gallery will have Extended Hours on September 6 for First Thursday art events in downtown Muncie, until 8 PM. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

This exhibition focuses on the amazing work done by First Year students in the School of Art during the 2017-2018 academic year. This exhibit is a great chance to see the exciting drawings, designs, and sculptures being made by some of the School of Art's newest artists!

At a distance they appear photorealistic, but as you approach the pattern of the waves begins to break down into abstract forms and shapes. The limited field of the canvas has become a snapshot of eternity. Just as the sailor cannot drink the sea, he can only sail over its surface, viewer of art can only skim, they can never plumb the depths to know the heart of the one who created it.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open the exhibition Magic with paintings by artist Alan Patrick, Thursday September 6, 5 – 8 pm.    The exhibit will feature new paintings by Mr. Patrick who is beloved in Indiana’s art community and is always considered among the most committed and consistent talents of our time.  Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 he will speak briefly about his work.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

Patrick is known for his uncanny ability to capture the mist of early morning in the woods as well as the sunlight and haze of a summer afternoon settling on water and on distant landscapes.  “I can pass by a place a hundred times and that place is just ordinary.  There is nothing of visual interest there.  Then, one day, it’s magic. It has color, form, light, and drama.  It has suddenly become a wonderful place to look at.  I know there is a painting there.”

Patrick has strong roots in East Central Indiana having grown up in Centerville and received his training in painting and ceramics at Ball State University in the early 1960’s.  Soon afterward, he established the well-known Bethel Pike Pottery with John Peterson and David Cayton in Albany, Indiana.  When the pottery closed in 2006, he began to paint full time and has been included in many exhibitions throughout Indiana and beyond.  Several weeks ago he was given the “Award for Traditional Landscape” at the 2018 Hoosier Art Salon which is currently open at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis.

Flourish is a collection of work aimed at exploring the concept of complexity in geometry.  Working within a digital environment, each piece is created by repeatedly subdividing and extruding a single primitive shape. Over time, complex geometric patterns and compositions are generated and refined. The current collection includes graphic representations that illustrate the range of complexity that can be produced through the creation process.

“Hannah Barnes & Ted Neal: Sabbatical Exhibitions”
The Ball State University School of Art Atrium Gallery proudly presents a two-person exhibition of artwork by Hannah Barnes, Associate Professor of Art, Painting, and Ted Neal Professor of Art, Ceramics, from October 30 to November 29, 2018. The Atrium Gallery will have extended hours for the November 1st First Thursday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Barnes will conduct a public lecture at 5:30pm on November 15 in AJ225 regarding her work in the exhibition and her research in India after receiving a Fullbright Scholarship and a sabbatical leave during the 2017-18 academic year.

Neal received a sabbatical leave for the 2018 spring semester and will conduct a Gallery Talk on his work on Monday, November 19 at 3:30pm in the Atrium Gallery.

Barnes creates work that draws on a familiar vocabulary of abstract forms and tropes to explore the nature of meaning within abstraction. Her work in painting, drawing, and installation engages ideas such as structure and fragmentation, surface and depth, perception, illusion, impermanence, and the indeterminacy of images. 

Neal says about his work: “In all of my work, one constant is my use of the vessel as a framework upon which to hang concepts of utility and self-expression. Specifically, my utilitarian work is most satisfactory when a single object occupies space as both a useful object and one that also embodies loftier ideas such as beauty, connectedness and shared kinesthetic experiences.”

The School of Art Atrium Gallery is in the Art and Journalism Building and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 p.m.

“Studies In Isolation: An Art Exhibition by Shannon Mehaffey”
Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, November 1 for the opening reception of Studies In Isolation, an art exhibition by Shannon Mehaffey. The reception will take place in the newly renovated Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in conjunction with November’s First Thursday events.

Studies In Isolation is a mixed media series of paintings depicting derelict and vacant landscapes. Abandoned buildings, factories, blight, and power lines all serving as metaphors for loss, grief, and enduring hardship within oneself and surviving. The artist tries to convey a sense of beauty and wonder using color despite the blight around her; fueling a sense of optimism and a drive for survival.

Shannon Mehaffey is an artist and educator living and working in Muncie, Indiana. She teaches watercolor painting and mixed media arts to adults and youth at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Her work often incorporates elements of collage, alternative process photography, watercolor painting and drawing. Common concepts explored throughout the works often come from personal histories of growth, redemption, feminism, survivorship, and grief.

Studies In Isolation will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of November.

Robby Tompkins, “Take a Moment”
During the month of November a photographic art show featuring DWNTWN Muncie sunsets will be at The Fickle Peach. 

The name of the show is “Take A Moment" and is by downtown native Robby Tompkins. He began taking sunset photos a few years ago as a way to pause, relax, and put away the stress and hustle of everyday life. The show features 25 sunsets taken from the same downtown Muncie location.

“1992 WAS THE YEAR OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN”
The 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the western hemisphere in 1492 was the occasion for national and local celebrations. However, for Native people it was an occasion they could neither fully embrace nor participate in. Congress acknowledged their concerns regarding the Columbus Quincentennial by enacting 1992 as the “Year of the American Indian" signed by then President George H.W. Bush. 

The American Indian response to the anniversary was marked by public protests. Yet, it also was seen by many in that community as a special, year-long opportunity to hold public education events, commemorations of ancestral sacrifices and contributions to America, and celebrations for the survival of Native peoples over five centuries.

Debra Gindhart will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with an assemblage art series "Native American Indian Genocide". Adding several new pieces of art to her current collection. Art reflecting history in vibrant colors and mixed media.

Debra has also created a beautiful Green Glam Studio jewelry collection using native natural stones and beads. Her maker homage to Native American Indian bead works and artisans.

“Holiday Showcase”
Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company opens annual Holiday Showcase featuring work by Muncie’s Book Arts Collaborative, First Thursday, November 1

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open its annual Holiday Showcase on First Thursday, November 1 from 5-8 PM. Gordy is the area’s leading source for holiday gifts that are handmade locally.  During the event representatives will be on hand from Muncie’s Book Arts Collaborative, a letterpress shop and book publisher managed by Ball State immersive learning students.  They will give a special presentation of their work at 6:15 and will discuss their products such as hand-sewn journals, coasters, and greeting cards. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served giving customers the opportunity to buy unique objects created by local artists for holiday decorating and gift giving.

In addition to items from the Book Arts Collaborative, the Holiday Showcase offers drawings, jewelry, and pottery by skilled local people.  Prices range from $1 to $2,000, with most falling between $30 to $200. From whimsical “Funcie” signs and shirts to handcrafted mugs and plates. Paintings and prints capture Indiana’s landscapes in both traditional and contemporary styles.  The show will run through November and December and new items will be continually added.

“The Holiday Showcase offers great opportunities to find unique holiday gifts with a connection to Muncie and East Central Indiana,” says Gordy owners Barbara and Carl Schafer.  “Often our customers are shopping for friends and children who have moved away from the area and want something special to remember their hometown.  Others want to buy something unique and affordable as well as support the East Central Indiana art scene.”

First Floor Show:
“The Figurative Element: Drawings from Life”

A group show of drawings made by Ball State students, alumni, and faculty. The drawings in the exhibition are drawn from life. We believe that drawing from life creates a more sensitive and lively drawing which reveals subtle decisions made by the artist and makes a record of an encounter with the subject being drawn.

“Design is a tool of action. Architecture is a verb.”

Curiosity and a passionate spirit of inquiry have always helped me foster learning to fashion architecture in so many ways. Aaron Betsky challenges: ‘Is an architect more than just somebody who gets buildings built? Any architect who has a sense of self-worth derived from something other than money or the satisfaction of getting a job done must answer this question. That means that she or he must believe that there is either an artistic role (making beauty) or a critical one for the architect. Both are profoundly difficult notions to maintain.’ Here I am (once again) trying to maintain both of those complex hypotheses. The construction of the structural forms created intends to provoke the force that attracts a body towards the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having weight. Those anatomical shapes are result of a deep exploration on the material used. To stretch, to fold, to pleat, to compress, to crimp, to crinkle, to ruck up, to crease, to surface, among others, become new components of the architectural vocabulary and, essentially, creative parts of the making of architecture. There is more. I do believe in explorations (future) that go beyond the experiences already done (past) and cross-examine subjects from 360 degrees leaving behind presuppositions or preconceived concepts.

Light Up DWNTWN

Light Up DWNTWN, powered by Indiana Michigan Power, will be held on First Thursday, December 6, from 5 -8 p.m. throughout Downtown Muncie. Galleries, restaurants, and retailers invite you to spend the evening with them as we kick off the holiday shopping season.

The Community Tree Lighting ceremony will take place at Canan Commons (located in the 500 block of S. Walnut St.) at 6:00 p.m. Join us as Mayor Dennis Tyler, BSU President Geoffrey Mearns Charlie Cardinal and Santa Claus light up the holiday tree! 

New this year will be an animated light show synchronized to music! The light show will be executed several times throughout December with times and dates to be announced. 

Muncie Community School's Elementary School Choirs will sing their Community Christmas Sing songs and lead the crowd in a carol or two!

Canan Commons will also be the location for the Holiday Makers Market, featuring nearly 50 artists in a heated tent.

Kiddie Express train will be running. Fire pits will be lit to keep you warm and concessions will be available. 

Brian Blair’s holiday sculptures will be on display at the park throughout the holiday season.

The School of Art Atrium Gallery presents a BFA Exhibition featuring the work of Aminta Cabrera, Taylor Fentz, and Teddy Lepley. There will be an opening reception from 4-6pm with extended hours until 8pm for First Thursday. The show runs from December 4-8.

Gallery hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday, and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays, and during all holidays and breaks observed by Ball State. Free admission.

Book Arts Collaborative is featuring hand carved prints for $5 and holiday cards by local folk artist Mary Miller. We’ve also got hand-sewn journals and letterpressed holiday cards and wrapping paper. It’s the last First Thursday for 5 of our students who are graduating in December. Debra Gindhart, longtime local artist/artivist and visual arts educator has created “WWJB (What Would Jesus Buy),” a visual look at the consumerism that plagues our planet. She will also feature “I don't NEED A PRINCE” a view into the world of Disney indoctrination. “Tiny Trump”s is a sculptural homage to our POTUS 45 (pussy grabs). Debra's December First Thursday exhibition will also include REAL BABES RECYCLE and Green Glam Studio jewelry. Meet the artist and enjoy green tea from Italy and holiday cookies from 5-8pm on the 2nd floor of Madjax.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will feature the works of local artists in its Holiday Showcase on First Thursday, December 6 from 5-8 PM. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served giving customers the opportunity to buy unique objects created by local artists for holiday decorating and gift giving. Greg Pyle and Austin Burton will be joining in the festivities with their musical talents including a favorite Christmas song or two.

Gordy is the area’s leading source for drawings, jewelry, journals, paintings, and pottery designed and made by local artists.  Most prices fall between $30 to $200. From whimsical “Funcie” signs and shirts to “Goddess” mugs that celebrate the female form. Muncie Makes Lab will feature work by the College of Architecture and Planning at BSU on the first floor from 5-8pm. “Objectile Athenaeum’s: Architectural Research in Robotic Concrete 3D Printing” is led by CAP Professor Chris Battaglia. Through the lens of additive manufacturing, the exhibition consists of a series of projects looking at the potential of mass customization through the material parameters of concrete 3D printing. Objectile Athenaeum’s is a 4th year design studio where students investigated how the shift from mass production to mass customization will change the way we think about architectural design. From the fabrication of a 3D printing platform, to the design of individual architectural components, the work ranges in scale to speculate how the shift in concrete construction techniques will impact design methodologies.

Join PlySpace on First Thursday, December 6th, for an Artist-in-Residence Double Feature with two performances by current Fall 2018 resident Linda Ryan and past Spring 2018 resident Melissa Joy Livermore. 

The first performance, Experiment in Tension, is a collaborative work by Melissa Joy Livermore and Linda Ryan, and is an extension of Deconstruction, a performance that Livermore exhibited during her residency at PlySpace last Spring.  Deconstruction is the practice of slowing down to engage in the present moment. The many iterations of the project have emphasized the mental space for contemplation and conversation created by removing thread after thread from a piece of fabric.  Experiment in Tension shifts the focus to the body -- by performing a repetitive action in collaboration, the work expands Deconstruction to a multi-person endeavor centered on the mental and physical spaces we can share with others.

The second performance, The Thaw, is a solo dance by current PlySpace Resident Linda Ryan, and is the culmination of the work she has completed while in residence this fall. Ryan will perform using a thermochromic (heat-sensitive) floor that changes color upon contact with the dancer's body. The artist will dance, crawl, roll, and run on the floor to create an ephemeral record of movement and body heat that will remain in memory but fade with time. The floor was constructed and engineered by Ryan while at PlySpace.

Melissa Joy Livermore graduated from Ball State University in 2015 and was an artist in residence with Transform Creative in Paris in 2017. Linda Ryan holds a BA in Dance from the George Washington University's Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, where she received the Luther Rice Research Fellowship as well as the Enosinian Scholars Grant. She is an award-winning dance researcher, conducting movement research and experiential choreography both internationally and at home in the US.

Performances begin at 6:00 PM (Experiment in Tension), 6:30 PM (The Thaw), 7:00 PM (Experiment in Tension), 7:30 PM (The Thaw), and last roughly 20 minutes each. There will be a short break (5-10 minutes) between performances. The audience is encouraged to arrive and take a seat 5 minutes before the performance start time.  All performances will be held in the PlySpace Gallery, at 608 E. Main Street. Parking is available at the northeast corner of Main and Monroe Streets. Please use the gallery entrance on the west side of the building, located directly off of the parking lot.

Artist Turned Farmer: An Art Exhibition by Erica Markley

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, January 3 for the opening reception of Artist Turned Farmer, an art exhibition by Erica Markley. The reception will take place in the newly renovated Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in conjunction with January’s First Thursday events.

Through her work on a small homestead, Erica Markley has developed a style of painting that is best described as delicate and familiar. Painting scenes that are derived from her mental and physical residence, her visions of a distant landscape are inspired from memory and longing. Adduced from her own thoughts, the colors she puts to canvas are “landscapes coming from a familiar and detached place”. While she has been using acrylic and oil to define her art since 2015, her work has branched into multiple areas of uniqueness including animal husbandry and agriculture. Now, she experiments with portraits of strangers and the creation of tangible, locally made products. Erica’s mantra is that through art, one is set free to see the world as they wish.

Artist Turned Farmer will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of January.

Jordyn Fender began pursuing photography at the age of 5. At the age of 16, she held her first exhibition in the B3 Gallery in Nashville, Indiana. Since that time, she has worked to share her art with others through gallery exhibitions. She dreams of becoming a well-traveled and world-renowned photographer, taking photos for magazines, starting her own gallery, and selling work to galleries around the world.

Fender’s photography represents her view of beauty. Taking photos of anything and everything, finding beauty and inspiration in nature, architecture, animals, and people. Her macro views strive to find the beauty in the details of a subject.

Through the Lense will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of February.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open an exhibition of new paintings by artist Carol Strock Wasson, Thursday February 7, 5 – 8 pm. She is one of Indiana’s most accomplished and beloved painters, and Gordy has represented her work for many years.  Throughout the evening, the artist will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 she will speak briefly about her work.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

Carol Strock Wasson lives and works in Union City, Indiana.  She is an Indiana Artisan and her work is routinely included among Indiana’s most prestigious artists in the Hoosier Salon and the Indiana Heritage Arts Exhibition.  Known as a “Plein Air” artist, she often paints outside on location.  Sometimes she finishes paintings in this manner. Very often she sketches or composes “studies” on location and then returns to her studio to finish them. “Paintings completed on-site tend to have more excited strokes which show the artist’s sense of discovery,” says Gordy owner Carl Schafer. “Those completed in the studio are more refined as she spends time clarifying the image and introducing colors that heighten awareness of time of day, temperature, ground water, humidity, and rain.” Examples of both methods will be on view in the exhibition.

“Motivate Our Minds ‘We Think It We Make it’ after school club”: The fourth through eighth grade students at Motivate Our Minds will be exhibiting work from their after-school club led by Ball State architecture professors and their students. Drop by the CAP Makes Muncie Makes workshop- students will be working on their cPads (portable chalk pads) in the MakerHub. This is the first of a series of designs for the community garden being planned adjacent to Shaffer Chapel.

“BFF Pop Up Thrift”: Custom head wear and wearable art by Emma Grace Dragoo, 5-8pm, 2nd floor.

“Sam Gindhart Pop Up”: Sam Gindhart is an visually impaired fiber artist from New Castle, IN. She does her craft by feel. She can't see the t-shirt images. She transforms contemporary and collectible t-shirts into wall art. Sam uses 16x20 canvas.  She has really adapted to losing her eyesight. The best thing is she is the happiest she has ever been in her life, 5-8pm, 2nd floor.

Real Love, Baby is a contemporary art show based on the themes of love, heartache, and genuine emotion. It will feature a range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, performance, and multimedia work from both local and regional artists. Second Floor: “No Labels / Design is a Tool of Action / Architecture is a Verb,” Installation by Ana de Brea, in collaboration with Taylor Henderson, Jesse Lindenfeld, and Barbara Willey. This show is a broad and effervescent speculative-reservoir designated to undertake ventures related to modern reflections and contemporary works of spatial and cultural matters.

The comprehension of envisaging the design discipline (architecture included) as a vigorous energy intends to spotlight the value of ‘construction’ -the tangible and/or the intellectual.  That vigorous energy looks for architectures like processes of thinking and making as well as it questions how those processes work in the global scenario of today.

Orphaned at the age of six, Chappelow’s life became one of neglect and abuse. A kind word by a teacher about a picture she drew at age 8 lit a spark. One act of kindness, never forgotten. As the years passed, art was the light out of the darkness.

The Light Out of The Darkness will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of March.

The Fickle Peach (21+)

Artist Amy Rocco will show her work at the Fickle Peach for March’s First Thursday. Amy was formally trained in painting knowledge and techniques at her previous institution, Florida Southern College, before transferring to Ball State University with a focus on art history. Taking inspiration from her classes, she is a portrait artist using bold colors and mixed mediums to bring life and modernity to her paintings. These expressive contemporary portraits focus on representing the female form with the intension of transmitting emotion to the viewer.

Local artist Debra Gindhart will feature her repurposed and recycled Green Glam Studio jewelry during March First Thursday. Gindhart is an avid reuser of many elements, proclaiming her personal pledge to save the landfills one piece of costume jewelry at a time. Debra believes one should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open an exhibition of new oil paintings by artist Michael Miller, Thursday March 7,  5 – 8 pm. Miller moved from Los Angeles to Anderson in 2007 and has a studio in the Union Building. His new paintings are large and colorful landscapes and oceanscapes. Throughout the evening, the he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 he will speak briefly about his work. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Miller is known nationally as a painter of golf courses and he is meticulously faithful to the sweeping outdoor scenes he paints. As a former golf professional, his career is an unusual cross between the sporting world and the art world. In the 1980s and 90s he was Head Golf Professional at both the MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles and the Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, CA. He learned painting from Gene Mako, who was a Davis Cup tennis champion and the son of the great American painter Bartholomew Mako. “Miller’s painting style is reminiscent of Mako who used ‘soft edges’ to make images that are more like the way human eyes see the world,” says Gordy owner Carl Schafer. “This allows viewers to imagine the sounds and smells that would be present in the real place.”  

Miller’s painting career includes One-Person shows at both the United States Golf Association Museum in Far Hills, NJ, and the World Golf Hall of Fame Museum in St. Augustine, FL   He has illustrated two books, "The Art of Golf Design" and "The Golden Age of Golf Design" for golf historian and author, Geoff Shackelford.

The exhibition will remain on view with works for sale throughout the month of March. She can't see the t-shirt images. Sam transforms contemporary and collectible t-shirts into wall art. She has really adapted to losing her eyesight. Idia Lab: Virtual Reality Projects: Ball State University’s IDIA Lab will showcase recent virtual reality projects at Madjax during Muncie’s Artswalk. PlySpace Residents will hold Open Studios for First Thursday, March 7th, from 5-8 PM on the second floor in Madjax Muncie. In celebration of the Spring Residency Term, all four Spring Residents will offer glimpses into their creative practice and be available to answer questions about their upcoming projects. Stop by to learn more about the artists, their work, and their collaborative projects in Muncie. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free + open to the public. 

PlySpace is an artist-in-residence program based in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District in downtown Muncie and is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council. The residency is dedicated to offering visual artists, writers, and other creative individuals time and space to investigate and pursue their own practices while also serving as a platform for experimentation and provocation by facilitating collaboration with various Muncie communities.

About the Residents:
Kevin Titzer was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, although he has been based in the Saguenay region of Quebec for the last nine years. His sculptures are predominantly created from found and scavenged materials. His site-specific installation work is often crafted from materials gathered at the location of construction and formed into improvised house structures. These structures are highly informed by the communities in which they are created. Titzer has been exhibiting professionally in art galleries for twenty years and his work has been shown in Canada, Mexico, Japan, UK, and across the United States.

Siena Hancock is an interdisciplinary artist who makes sculpture, interactive installation, and artist books/zines. A Boston native, Hancock graduated Massachusetts College of Art with her BFA in 2016. She has recently completed an installation at the Dirt Palace in Providence, RI and a residency at Main St Arts in Upstate, New York. Research plays an important role in Hancock’s practice. Utilizing an ethnographic approach, she records interviews with women as part of ongoing project Feminist Utopias. Her current work deals with cyberfeminism, alternative realities, mythology, and how technology affects social customs.

Matt Litwin and Victoria Eidelsztein created a street art campaign called FaceMePorFavor with the simple mission of painting portraits as portals to the human spirit. Their goal is to create a visual voice for people to share their hopes and dreams, fear and despair. They install wheat-paste portraits throughout the streets to connect the City with its people—young, old, immigrants, and the hidden people of Buenos.

Litwin holds a degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and started his own business, Limpio Designs, to help ‘clean’ oppressive environments in Chicago with positive and colorful artwork. Through Limpio, Litwin had the opportunity to work as a traveling muralist and street artist in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Thailand, Canada, and the United States.

Eidelsztein has a degree in Visual Arts with an orientation in printmaking and has been exhibited her work in group and solo shows since 2008. Since 2013, she has been teaching art in different spaces in Buenos Aires: Flexible Lab, Pinta Conmigo and also at Martín Buber and September elementary schools. Her work has progressed through various media: printmaking, drawing, digital art, and painting. In recent years, Victoria has focused her work on portraits.

Book Arts Collaborative is publishing a book containing a series of paintings and short, creative non-fiction essays by South Bend artist and writer Kelcey Parker Ervick.  This publication is a true Muncie effort, with type loaned by Tribune Showprint Posters, Inc. and digital images printed at Pengad. Come by the shop to see students hand-stitching the book's title into its Coptic-style construction. These artists' books are truly unique with covers made from vintage blueprints and slipcovers fabricated out of Tribune's poster over-runs, the structure of the book reinforces its message about devolution and obsolescence in the most fun way possible.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts, in partnership with PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union, hosted the Young Artist Exhibition on Thursday, March 14 for school-age children in Delaware County. The show featured the artwork of students in kindergarten through twelfth grades who reside in or attend school in Delaware County. Students that placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or Honorable Mention will have their artwork on display in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone for the month of April. Artwork will then be displayed at PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union’s three branches.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open an exhibition of new paintings by artist Alfredo Marin-Carle, Thursday April 4,  5- 8pm. Marin-Carle joined the faculty at Ball State University in 1985 teaching graphic design in the Journalism department. He is now Associate Professor Emeritus and resides in Indianapolis. Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 he will speak briefly about his work. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

Marin-Carle’s new paintings explore his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies and the understanding of every living being as an expression of the cosmos. “Alfredo’s process reflects the creation and destruction always going on around us,” says Gordy co-owner Carl Schafer.  “The constant push-and-pull is described in Buddhism as Yin and Yang.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He carves recognizable images then scratches deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. The paintings are made of primeval materials starting with tar paper which he paints with multiple layers of different colors. The sanding and carving reveal the layers underneath and then the application of certain chemicals encourages the tar to permeate the paint layers causing discoloration that will continue through the life of the painting.  “The process of the tar moving within the paint layer brings the paintings to life,” Alfredo says.  “These paintings will change in subtle and beautiful ways over time.”

Thorson states: “As a professor of philosophy, I live in a world of words and analytical argumentation. At times, it is hard to keep in mind the big questions that each of us must face in our lives. Nonetheless, the big questions are important and there is more to answering them than analytical argumentation. Indeed, emotional content is as important, but philosophers often ignore the emotions. When I paint, this emotional content emerges. Images can make philosophical questions deeply and personally felt. Painting makes my professional life as a philosopher more interesting and my professional occupation allows me to infuse my paintings with meaning.”

MFA School of Art Open Studios: Interested in seeing how artwork comes to life? Have you ever wondered about the process to create an animated film, or wanted to see the sketches and planning that go into a developed artistic vision? Ball State School of Art MFA Candidates will be hosting open studios at MADJAX Muncie on First Thursday, April 4th from 6pm - 8pm. Exhibiting artists include: Dakota Blose, Rachel Carter, Sam Chumley, Ben Fulcher, Jennifer Hathaway, Breeana Hinton, Emily Thornton, and Seul Yi. The community is invited to meet the artists and explore works in progress, ask questions, and learn about the ideas and processes behind the projects as they develop. The artists will be displaying works in animation, 3D modeling and design, ceramics, and metalsmithing. The work being shown are samples of projects that the MFA candidates have been working on throughout their time in the graduate program at Ball State University. The artists will also be demonstrating their work process and will be selling artwork such as jewelry, prints, and caricatures. This event is open to the public and refreshments will be available.

Motivate Our Minds Community Garden: GROUNDworks: Motivate Our Minds, Ball State, and community members are developing spaces for play, gathering, and gardening in the Whitely neighborhood east of the Shaffer Chapel. Landscape architecture, architecture, and interior design students will exhibit work from their GROUNDworks design build class.

“We Think It, We Make It:” M.O.M. and CAP Makes

At the CAP Makes Muncie Makes workshop at Madjax, students in grades 4-8 from Motivate Our Minds will exhibit work from their after-school club, “We Think It, We Make It,” led by Ball State architecture professors and their students. Students will be constructing concrete pavers and animal sign chalkboards in continuation with a series of designs for the community garden being planned adjacent to Shaffer Chapel.

BSU Visual Communications Senior Design Show
Join us for the BSU Visual Communications Senior Design Show from 6-9pm at the Muncie Makes Lab with a juror presentation at Ball State’s Arts and Journalism Bldg. Room 225 at 5pm. The Senior show is an exhibit by the graduating class of Graphic Design students at Ball State University, School of Art. Students will show their capstone design campaign, a multifaceted project that will represent the culmination of their design education by demonstrating a connection between academic theory and practice of design. This year we are inviting Bryony Gomez-Palacio to judge the student work and give awards.

About the Juror: Born and raised in Mexico City, Bryony Gomez-Palacio is a graphic designer and writer now living in Bloomington, IN. She is co-founder of UnderConsideration—a graphic design firm and publishing enterprise all rolled into one—where she manages the behind-the-scenes of the online network comprised of Brand New, FPO, Quipsologies and The Art of the Menu. Bryony has co-authored five books with her husband and partner, Armin Vit—their most popular titles being Graphic Design, Referenced and the self-published Flaunt. Most recently, they conceived and presented the Brand New Conference, the Brand New Awards, the FPO Awards, and the recently launched lecture series by The Austin Initiative for Graphic Awesomeness. Bryony enjoys conducting workshops and lecturing when not tending to her two young daughters and their crazy schedules.

As part of the PlySpace 2019 spring programming, the public is invited to explore and interact with an exciting, family-friendly installation and exhibition by PlySpace Resident Fellow, Kevin Titzer. Nowhere To Be And All Day To Get There will open on Thursday, April 4th, from 5 - 8 PM at the PlySpace Gallery (608 E. Main Street), as part of the April First Thursday in downtown Muncie, Indiana. Light refreshments will be served, and the artist will speak about his work at 7:00 PM. PlySpace is an artist-in-residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council which provides artists a space to create and connect with the Muncie community through collaborative projects.

Nowhere To Be And All Day To Get There is the fifth installment of an ongoing project started at the end of 2017 in which Titzer traveled to different communities, including Guadalajara, Mexico; Bloomington, Indiana; and Alma, Quebec, Canada, to create sculptures using local resources. Through the process of scavenging materials and meeting people in each region, he worked to capture the feeling and history of each location through an installation using its objects and refuse. About the site-specific nature of this project, Titzer says, "Often different communities value and discard different things. This makes each installment of this project unique and impossible to create in any other place or time."

The installation at PlySpace reflects the time Titzer has spent in Muncie using found, donated, and scavenged materials from the area. The found-object sculptures and structures in the installation will feature interactive elements, electronic movement, or sound, which can be activated by the viewer. Titzer says his final exhibition is a mix of his own experiences and reactions while at the PlySpace Residency in Muncie. "I'm left with an amalgam of images that filters through the studio. What emerges is an impressionistic view of my time spent in a specific region. In this respect, the art often reflects aspects of that community, but isn't a one-to-one portrait per se."

As the PlySpace Resident Fellow, Titzer has been collaborating with Ball State University School of Art Students in two 3D Foundations classes to explore the use of alternative materials in sculptural practice. Through a series of workshops and class visits with the students, he has discussed how found and scavenged objects can be creative catalysts for sculptural ideas. Each student will design and craft a different found-object bird sculpture which will contribute to the final exhibition.

Brinkman Gallery presents “Waterscapes,” featuring meticulously painted water landscapes. At a distance they appear photorealistic, but as you approach the pattern of the waves begins to break down into abstract forms and shapes. Also on display are original DOG portraits, new puzzle pieces, and a section of “Sweet Thursday” by artist Kevin Campbell. Puzzles range from a single piece to a 730 piece puzzle. Additionally, some of Gay Nation’s personal Garfield collection will be on display. Come out to meet Kevin and enjoy refreshments from 5-8pm.

College of Architecture & Planning Centennial Design Build Project- Flock:
Flock is a temporary installation in downtown that reads as an object but is made up of discrete parts just as Muncie is a collective of cultural backgrounds that come together to form a community. The project is supported by the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning and in collaboration with DWNTWN_Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. Flock is a design build project headed by Assistant Professor of Architecture James F. Kerestes and his students, Lauren Hunter and Katie Gordon. The project is part of the College or Architecture and Planning’s centennial celebration and aims to highlight the long standing history and achievements of the school. The installation will be on the Northwest Corner of Canan Commons on property owned by DeFur Voran.

Muncie’s Downtown Development:
Help us hearken warmer weather with Muncie Ballet Studio and BSU Student Dance Association as they join us to teach our young guests a Maypole dance! Look for the Maypoles at Canan Commons. Magic City Music Men will be serenading from the stage. Muncie Public Library will also be on hand at Canan Commons to help the littles create a Mothers Day craft bouquet. There will also be a flash mob/silly parade event!

Movement in Nature An Art Exhibition by Kimberley True:
Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, May 2 for the opening reception of Movement in Nature, an art exhibition by Kimberley True. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with May’s First Thursday events.

The world around us is ever-evolving, always in motion and yet quiet and still. It is enveloping and frightening and awe-inspiring. As above in the clouds and stars, so below in the deepest oceans, this is where Kimberley True finds her greatest source of inspiration.

True’s art is deeply rooted in her fascination with movement in nature. She has created paintings that flow and breathe across the canvas. Her color schemes are influenced from far-off galaxies, sunsets over Midwestern fields, and the crashing waves along our ocean's shores.

Kimberley True is a Muncie-native and only daughter to local artists Randy and Debbie True. Her first loves were reading and writing however art was a close third. The messier the medium, the better. After charcoal, pastels, and watercolor, Kim settled on acrylics as her preferred modus operandi.

The DCHS will have the Moore-Youse Home Museum open at 120 East Washington St. We will have a "Meet the Authors" event with several local authors who have written books on local Delaware County Historical topics. We will have their books and more available for sale. Visitors can also sign up to win a Delaware County Historical afghan/throw with a $40 value and do not have to be present to win. The exhibit galleries will be open featuring "Toys from our past to present," Delaware County Sports including Muncie's Pro Football Team the Congerville Flyers, and a new exhibit featuring "Treasures from the Museum’s Collection."

Ball State University senior photojournalism major and women's and gender studies minor Grace Hollars, who has explored the world photographing two Olympics and was named 2017 Indiana College Photographer of the Year, takes on a new adventure in her hometown of Muncie documenting inspiring women who are changing and building up the community. "Bursting: Stories Inspired by Women,” is a rich collection of women we know as our neighbors, coworkers, sisters, wives, and friends whose stories are captured through twelve large 20x30 images.

FILM IS NOT DEAD is a celebration of the artistic and nostalgic value of 35mm film photography in our digital-first world. Featured analog photographers Zach Poor, Tanesha Tanaé Burrell, Bobby Bennett, Kenton Little, and Joshua Westbrook are showcasing a variety of photographs, all captured the "old-fashioned" way.

Zach Poor is a graphic designer by trade who enjoys exploring the intersection of digital and analog creative expression in his personal work. Shooting film on his mom’s old Pentax K1000 gives him the opportunity to slow down and create images with appropriate meaning and magnitude and to practice traditional creative processes in a modern era. 

Tanesha Tanaé Burrell is a lively creative with an appetite for design. She enjoys working in a variety of different mediums including digital media, printmaking, drawing, and film photography. Inspired by different aspects of her faith, she desires to express what words fail to at times.

Born and raised in Illinois (the “s” is silent). Bobby Bennett has gone a few places of note: Ball State, Iceland, the bathroom, but never to the emergency room for any broken bones. He currently works at Union Chapel Ministries as the Creative Arts Director (the Uncreative Arts Director position was already taken. His job requires more creativity, sometimes in the form of puns and dumb humor and parentheticals!) He also enjoys shooting on film and capturing moments and sharing things that may be hiding in plain sight and run on sentences.

Kenton Little started shooting film for a class in college where he fell in love with not only the look you get from film, but the process of developing and printing as well. He shoots film to get away from screens for a bit and just enjoy the physical world around him. He loves the feeling of excitement film gives when you have to wait to see the results of the photos you take. 

Joshua Westbrook grew up overseas in Central Asia, but is now proud to live and work in the city of Muncie that he has adopted as his home. An idealist at heart, he hopes that his work uncovers points of true human connection through the lens of place and culture.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate the brink of summer with the fresh and beautiful work of Margie Prim during May’s First Thursday on May 2, from 5:00 to 8:00.  Margie will give a short talk at 6:15. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Margie’s heavy strokes swipe the canvas with dabs of bold color to create beautiful still lifes and peaceful landscapes. This quiet artist brings out her passion for life through canvases which captures scenes from East Central Indiana.  This Muncie artist’s inspirations may be found as easily down an alley, by the White River, or out in a farmer’s field.  “I just get in my car and I drive,” Margie explains.

Margie Prim began her art career in the 1960s in Oklahoma by taking painting lessons. She arrived in Muncie in the 1970s.  She laid her brushes down until the early 1990s when she started taking various art classes offered by community organizations such as the YMCA. She took lessons from Walt Lewis at the Stan Nossett School of Fine Art in Muncie. Margie, the perpetual student, continues learning through her involvement with the New Richmond Group and Indiana Plein Air Painters.

Margie considers herself both a studio and plein air artist and is adept in both methods.  She enjoys, especially in colder months, to work from sketches or photographs in the comfort of her studio.  As a plein air painter she works outside, on location, to create her paintings.

Margie has shown in the Minnetrista Annual, the Richmond Art Museum Annual, and Red-Tail Land Conservancy Open Spaces Exhibit. She has won  several awards and held several one woman exhibits in the region.  In early 2019, Margie won honorable mention in the Madison County Art Show. Her works have been included in the Indiana Waterways Project and the Women’s Commission Art Exhibit.

The exhibition will remain on view with works for sale throughout the month of May.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists, provides appraisals, and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art. CAP’s IDIA Lab and Landscape Architecture at Artswalk Madjax!
Ball State University’s IDIA Lab will showcase recent virtual reality projects at Madjax (514 E Jackson St Muncie, Indiana) during Muncie’s Artswalk. Stop by to explore selections from our immersive multiuser environments that use the HTC Vive VR headsets, animations and custom Human Computer Interaction projects. IDIA Lab staff, students and faculty will be on hand for questions about how these emerging technologies are being used in the arts, sciences and humanities. IDIA Lab is an interdisciplinary virtual reality and simulation lab at Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning. 

Additionally students from the College of Architecture and Planning’s Dynamic and the Digital course will be exhibiting their creative works that involve time-based, virtual and augmented reality experimentations. Landscape Architecture First Year Graduate Studio will also be exhibiting design instigations for Farmished’s urban agricultural training farm.

The Muncie Makers Market is happy to be a part of Muncie’s First Thursday community events, thanks to an invitation to take over the sidewalks in front of the Muncie Map Co., at 111 East Adams Street, in Downtown Muncie. We set up on the SE corner of Adams and Walnut Streets from 5-8pm on the first Thursday of every month. Plenty of nearby free parking! I’m really excited for us to have this opportunity and I am really hoping we get a nice evening of weather for the 2nd. Susan Danner will be hosting our kiosk of consignment items inside the Muncie Map Co. during First Thursday as well, and I also invite everyone to join her there to see what we’ve got going on inside of this super-cool locally-owned shop.

Two First Thursday’s of each year are designated as ArtsWalk, in May and October, so some of our Makers will also be down at Canan Commons at the Spring 2019 Muncie YART. First Thursday is a popular local tradition, going years back, with all sorts of vendors, artists, and entertainers set up throughout all of Downtown Muncie inside and outside of various shops, restaurants, bars, and other businesses. PhotoVoice Project on Opioid Use Disorder: An interdisciplinary group of Ball State students from Health Science and Anthropology are presenting a display of photos, which aim to ignite conversation about the escalating crisis of opioid abuse in our community. There will be a series of photos linked with brief quotes from service providers on what has caused the crisis, how it is affecting our community, and how we can move forward. Informational pamphlets on opioid use disorder will also be available. We will be setting up in the alcove of the old Chase Bank.

Muncie Arts and Culture Council is pleased to celebrate Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, May 2, 2019 with an opening reception for Transplanted, a stop-motion animation video game by artists Emily Thornton and Ben Fulcher. The artists will speak about their work at 7:00 PM and will be available to answer questions and share insights about the project and their process with guests. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.  The interactive exhibition of their work will be on view from April 30 to May 3, 2019 12:00 - 5:00 pm in the PlySpace Gallery at 608 East Main Street in downtown Muncie.

Developed collaboratively by Fulcher and Thornton, Transplanted is a stop-motion video game that explores the benefits of taking care of another living thing and how that connection can change your life. The narrative of the game is centered around a woman named Elaine who has just graduated college and no longer has a goal or focus for her life. The objective of the game is to take care of a plant that is delivered to her house, an act which serves as a catalyst for change in the character’s life. By taking care of the plant, Elaine begins a transformation from lethargic depression to sentimental optimism through taking care of herself. The game plays as a quick, meditative passage through a character’s personal landscape. As each player slowly begins unpacking Elaine’s personal belongings, they are invited into the sentimental values of often innocuous items. The game is a meditation on personal motivation, and overcoming seemingly monumental tasks, one step at a time.

In March, Transplanted was selected as a finalist for the Big Indie Pitch competition at the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California, where Fulcher and Thornton shared their project and received industry feedback alongside other indie developers. Both artists will receive their Master of Fine Arts in Animation from Ball State University’s School of Art this spring. This exhibition of their MFA thesis work offers visitors a unique opportunity to interact with Transplanted and the creative process behind it through individual gaming stations, documents of the digital rendering process, and the display of physical elements from the game’s stop-motion design.

Ben Fulcher received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in Drawing from Clemson University. He is currently an Master of Fine Arts candidate in Animation at Ball State University School of Art. He spent time teaching English in China and Taiwan. Fulcher was awarded the Aspire Grant from Ball State University in 2018 and 2019. His work has been included in the Independent Talents International Film Festival in Bloomington, IN; the Life Screenings International Film Festival in Clermont, FL; and the Weird Wednesday 0711—Monthly in Stuttgart, Germany.

Emily Thornton received her Bachelor of Science from Huntington University, and is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Animation at Ball State University School of Art.. Her work has been accepted into RAW Natural Born Artist and published in The Broken Plate, and Huntington Chapter Ictus. Thornton is also a recipient of a silver award from the American Advertising Federation of Fort Wayne.

The PlySpace Gallery is an exhibition and project space programmed by the Muncie Arts & Culture Council to support the activities of the PlySpace Residency as well as the objectives of emerging, experimental, and underrepresented artists and art forms. This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2019 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the May 2019 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, May 2nd, from 5-8pm. YART will ring the park at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater at the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, June 6 for the opening reception of Sparking Nostalgia Through Pop Culture, an art exhibition by Will Britton Jr. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with June’s First Thursday events.

Sparking Nostalgia Through Pop Culture is a collection of pop culture icons. From the obscure to the more commonly known, Britton’s work brings forth nostalgia from childhood favorites. The work invokes those things that would get you up early on Saturday with a big bowl of cereal eager to turn on cartoons. Those things that when you see them, you remember time, place, taste, and smell. Britton’s work seeks to transport viewers back to the joy of childhood.

Will Britton Jr. was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1997 and then went on to Vincennes University where he studied Fine Arts until he transferred to The Art Academy of Cincinnati. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with his specialty being printmaking. He has worked steadily making the art he loves while also working in social services. He lives in Muncie with his wife, children, an old dog and a bossy cat.  His everyday life consists of wrangling chaos and disorder, making items for local markets and a little D & D as time permits.

The Delaware County Historical Society presents “Muncie Mystery” from 5-7:30pm.

A serious (and pretend) crime has been committed in Downtown Muncie! We are calling on all citizen sleuths to participate in a real-life Clue game as part of the First Thursday festivities on June 6.

Between 5 and 6:30 pm, visit ten participating downtown businesses for clues about suspects and weapons. At each location, you will have the chance to answer a Muncie trivia question to learn more about our city, complements of the Delaware County Historical Society.

The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Muncie Civic Theatre at 7:00 pm. Sleuths who correctly identify the perpetrator and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including an overnight stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Muncie at Horizon Convention Center, Muncie Civic Theatre tickets, a silver crystal pendant from Pazols Jewelers, and more! (Must be present to win.)

The opening reception for Life in Plastic, featuring artwork by Sarah Shaffer will take place at Elm Street Brewing Co on Thursday, June 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The opening of Life in Plastic will take place in conjunction with First Thursday’s events.

The smallest things can have the biggest impact. Our childhoods shape us, create us, and define who we will become. In the collection titled, "Life in Plastic," Sarah Shaffer has explored society's monumental impact through the form of its tiniest role models. Each piece is a depiction of a doll, focusing only on a portion of the body and recreated in a large scale. This collection of acrylic paintings portrays the objectification of and unrealistic expectations placed upon women.

Sarah Shaffer is a native of Indiana, growing up in Fort Wayne with a love of art from an early age. Sarah is a graduate of Ball State University's Art Department, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing earned in 2007. Sarah lives with her husband and daughter in Muncie, Indiana, and works at Cornerstone Center for the Arts as the Education and Marketing Coordinator as well as a visual arts instructor.

The opening reception of Life in Plastic will include live music by local artist Caleb Ferguson. After attending the reception, Elm Street Brewing Co invites you to stick around, order dinner and a beer, and enjoy the relaxed family friendly atmosphere. The Peterson and Dunn Project will perform following the conclusion of the opening reception. Life in Plastic will be on display, with work for sale throughout the month of June.

Muncie Downtown Development will host outdoor “Afterhours Art Reels” following the First Thursday Gallery Walks, June-September.  Films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles St. at dusk.  Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests 21 and up. June’s movie is Baby Driver from director Edgar Wright.

Local social commentary artist Debra Gindhart will feature two assemblage pieces titled TOOLS 4 SCHOOLS. Debra believes that guns have no place in our schools. We must reduce the possibility of any gunfire in schools, rather than concentrating on ways to keep all guns off school property. Ensuring the safety of children and school employees, school administrators should focus on measures that will create safe and supportive learning environments for students, faculty, and staff. 

Debra Gindhart will also feature wearable art, painted clothing, and painted handbags. There will be an opening reception where you can meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments from 5-8pm. Madjax, 2nd floor.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will open Natural Influences: Two Hoosiers, Nature, and Their Art. From topographically inspired jewelry by Lisa Walsh to floral designed silks by Carrie Wright, the influence of nature will be celebrated during June’s First Thursday on June 6, from 5:00 to 8:00. Carrie Wright, a Muncie silk painter, will give a short talk at 6:15. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. The exhibition will remain on view with works for sale throughout the summer.

Carrie Wright, a Muncie silk painter and newly minted Indiana Artisan, will be sharing her beautiful pieces of wearable art. Wright gives specific attention to several details, such as: where the design elements are likely to fall on the body when the scarf is worn; an appropriate color pallet within the design with careful consideration for the occasion or outfit for which the scarf might be worn; a balanced combination of floral and graphic elements maintaining visual tension and interest. Wright’s creativity is nurtured by combining the clean design disciplines of the Japanese kimono textile creators and the forward-thinking creativity of European designers.

“I was born and raised amid the fields in northern Delaware County,” says Wright. “I’ve always been inspired by the beauty of Indiana landscapes, fields that stretch to the horizons of both the rising and setting sun. Much of my work is influenced by the flora of the area combined in some way with a bold graphic design element to help balance the piece and prohibit it from becoming flowery or fussy.”

Lisa Walsh, a jewelry designer from Lafayette, will be showcasing pieces from her Topography Series. Walsh uses enamels and mixed metals to portray accurate contour lines from topographical maps. Conceptualized in 2015, this series has received four consecutive Arts in the Parks grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. The Topography Series includes work featuring Clifty Falls and Spring Mill State Park in southern Indiana, and recently expanded to include areas of Shenandoah National Park where Walsh was artist-in-residence in 2018.

Walsh’s influence is a “fascination with topographical maps which I have had since studying fire science many years ago, but hadn't incorporated them into my work until relatively recently.  Topography and jewelry are such an unusual pairing that it often opens discussions that lead into important land and conservation issues,” she says.  “Jewelry is the ultimate traveling art, and as such, a great medium for encouraging dialogue between people.”

Come on down to Grace Episcopal Church (corner of Madison & Adams) for an awesome concert with singer song writer and recording artist Joan Hamilton. Tonight's concert begins at 7pm. Fixer Upper
Erica Collins’ 6th grade Northside Middle School math class worked with Tom Collins from the BSU Department of Architecture on an documentation and redesign project for a single room in which the students took physical measurements, drew scale drawings, learned about architectural drawing conventions, proposed renovations to the room, and calculated the renovation costs for materials and labor. The results of the 6-week project were shown at the MCS Celebrate Excellence Show in May.

Solar Decathlon Design Challenge
A Spring 2019 architecture design studio taught by Tom Collins with the assistance of Walter Grondzik and Tarek Mahfouz that participated in the US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. Two collaborative student-led teams developed net-zero energy ready housing proposals for sites in historic districts adjacent to downtown Muncie with community partners ecoREHAB and Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity.

Reimagining Memorial & Hoyt
A Summer 2019 architecture design studio/workshop co-taught by Pam Harwood and Tom Collins focused on reimagining, redeveloping, and reusing underutilized property in Muncie’s Southwestern neighborhoods to support neighborhood revitalization efforts to improve access to food, healthcare, housing, and transportation. The class is working with Building Better Neighborhoods and the 8 Twelve Coalition on this community design immersive learning project.

Debra Gindhart local artist will exhibit her Second Thursday show, "Stencil Artist." Stencils are probably the most popular technique used in graffiti, street art, and wall art worldwide. Stenciled art has many different reasons behind it. The technique provides graffiti artists and contemporary artists with several important advantages, most significant being the possibilities to create more art and also be more visible and swift. 

Debra, started experimenting with multi-layered cut out stencils and pre-cut stencils to add more colors and illusion of depth to her pieces ten years ago. This artistic experimentation resulted in much more elaborate and highly sophisticated stenciled artworks. Debra believes stencil artists take art to a whole new level, both in terms of aesthetics and messages they are trying to convey. "Stencil Art" will include some text on art messages as well. 

Debra will also have a collection of Green Glam Studio jewelry, earrings and statement pendants. She will be donating 20% of all recycled jewelry sales to support Bailey for Mayor campaign. There is also a 20% off sale on wall art from previous exhibits.

The mainhall of Madjax, 1st floor will feature art by Justin Brown, a 31 year old mixed media artist from Indianapolis, Indiana. His work focuses primarily on American intelligence agency psychological operations and surveillance. Justin Brown is the founder/executive director of Hoy Polloy Art Gallery in Indianapolis, Indiana.

This collection of work is a fraction of a series wherein Justin makes portraits of individuals with their FBI surveillance files. Individuals range from pop icons to lesser known community organizers and artists. The purpose of the series is to highlight the diversity and depth of the government’s previous surveillance programs as we enter a modern awakening to surveillance capitalism.

Brinkman Gallery is featuring a collection of miniature sculpted animals and Buddhas from Gay Nation's travels in Europe and Asia. Come out and enjoy refreshments from 5-8pm. Also featuring a permanent collection of artist, Kevin Campbell - "Waterscapes" meticulously painted water landscapes. At a distance they appear photorealistic, but as you approach the pattern of the waves begins to break down into abstract forms and shapes. Also on display, original DOG portraits, new puzzle pieces and a section of "Sweet Thursday" by artist Kevin Campbell. Puzzles range from a single piece to a 730 piece puzzle.

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, August 1 for the opening reception of Lessons in Color: A White Girl’s Education featuring art by Brenda Click. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with August’s First Thursday events.

Growing up and spending most of her life in predominantly white communities, Click realized she had so much to learn about race and racism. Her research began by reading books both fiction and nonfiction, holding conversations (listening mostly), attending lectures, and watching documentaries.  Click’s exhibit tells a story of that self-study through acrylic paintings and celebrates the persons of color she has come to know and the gratitude for lessons they have taught her.

Lessons in Color: A White Girl’s Education will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of August.

“Muncie Memories Exhibition”: The Muncie Arts and Culture Council & PlySpace Residency Program invites the public to the final exhibition event for the Muncie Memories project on First Thursday, August 1st, from 5-8 PM in the PlySpace Gallery (608 E. Main St, Muncie).  Muncie Memories is a collaborative, multi-media storytelling project led by PlySpace Resident Fellow Meredith Kooi, with assistance from Ball State University School of Art interns Ellie Phan, Jenna Mesker, Kai Cohen, Katie Strader, and Kitty Taylor. Muncie residents were invited to share their experiences, memories, and stories of the place they call home through a plethora of activities such as oral history interviews, fieldwalks, information gathering, soundwalking, archival research, and public engagement. The 10-week project engaged with over 100 participants from the community. The exhibition will feature highlights from the Muncie Memories project, including drawings by Cornerstone Summer Arts Camp students, interviews with Upward Bound of Ivy Tech students, archival material, artwork, photographs, audio and video documentation, interactive digital features, music and more. Join Cornerstone Center for Arts on Thursday, September 5 for the opening reception of A Family Affair featuring art by Linda, Jerry, and Eloise McKean. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with September’s First Thursday events.

The McKean family is in love with the visual arts. Subscribing to art pages on Facebook, visiting art galleries and museums at every opportunity, and regularly attending First Thursday events in Muncie. Cornerstone has been their headquarters for training in drawing, painting, ceramics, and mixed media. They are grateful for the chance to share their love of art with others.

Linda studied art in college, then stepped away from it for many years.  Five years ago, she decided she was in a time in life when she could return to her art.  She started painting and taking classes at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.  While her earlier paintings were very abstract, she is surprised to find that her style has evolved into “Representational Abstract”. One thing that has remained constant though, is her delight in and focus on the excitement of color.

When he was seven years old, Jerry started copying Batman comic books.  Thus began a life long appreciation of comic art. He began painting landscapes in classes with Gini Deaton and Sarah Shaffer.  Most of his other training comes from napping during episodes of “The Joy of Painting” by Bob Ross.  Joy, he has found comes from the play of color, brush and canvas in making happy little trees, mountains, and skies. 

Eloise is a junior at the University of Delta High School. She takes many art classes at school and as well as at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Her love for art started in elementary school and grew stronger as the years grew. She has taken glass, drawing, painting, ceramics and general art classes. 

In addition to the First Thursday gallery opening, The Muncie Chamber of Commerce will also be at Cornerstone for the ribbon cutting ceremony and reception for the Muncie Altrusa Foundation Beulah Frogge Digital Arts Studio on Thursday, September 5 at 5:30 pm. Please plan to attend both of these exciting events at Cornerstone.

A Family Affair will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of September.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company is one of a few picture framing studios in the Midwest that offers handmade, hand-gilded, and hand-decorated frames made from locally milled wood.   During the month of September, our gallery will feature new frames made from original and historical designs as well as a restored antique frame from our collection. The show will open on Thursday September 5, from 5-8pm. At 6:15, shop owner Carl Schafer will speak briefly about the work.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

Examples on view will demonstrate many traditional techniques used for decorating picture frames. These include gilding with 24K gold leaf and 12K white gold leaf, carving, sgraffito, granito, and compo ornaments. Also included will be more modern designs which are less decorative with the focus on form and surface such as wood grain, metal leaf, or other laminate.  “Gordy Framing has a long history of reproducing historical designs, creating original designs, and offering museum quality work restoring antique frames,” said owner Carl Schafer. “We are carrying on the tradition and adding to the portfolio established by Brian Gordy, the company’s founder.” On view will be frames inspired by Dutch and Italian renaissance styles, 19th century French and American styles, the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century, and contemporary American styles. 

The exhibition will remain on view throughout the month of September. Please join us from 5-8 pm for Vultures and Violets, a two-person exhibition by Erin Colleen Williams and Jessica Calderwood at Muncie Makes Lab. Trained as metalsmiths but working in multiple media, Williams and Calderwood both create drawings and sculptures that use the devices of narrative and anthropomorphism. While vastly different in materiality and approach, both artists seek to express a complex spectrum of human experiences, including fear, love and loss. 

Erin Colleen Williams (www.erincwilliams.com) received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Material Studies, focusing in metalsmithing and sculpture. Using interdisciplinary media and methods including drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and metalsmithing, her work examines the intersectionality of human and animal experiences. Her work has been exhibited nationally with solo exhibitions at the Anderson Gallery (Richmond, VA), and the Arlington Art Center (Arlington, VA), and with group exhibitions at the Philadelphia Art Alliance (Philadelphia, PA); the Virginia Arts Center (Richmond, VA); the Ford Gallery at Eastern Michigan University (Ypsilanti, MI); the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art (Wilmington, DE); among others. She is currently the Residency Coordinator for PlySpace, an artist residency program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, and is an Adjunct Professor at Ball State University. 

Jessica Calderwood (www.jessicacalderwood.com) is an image-maker and sculptor that works in esoteric craft media. She uses a combination of traditional and industrial metalworking processes as a means to make statements about contemporary life. She received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA from Arizona State University, with an emphasis Metalworking. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has participated in artist residencies with the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Program, Ferro Corporation, and the Mesa Arts Center. Her work has also been published in Metalsmith Magazine, American Craft, NICHE, Ornament, the Lark 500 series, and the Art of Enameling. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Ball State University.

An energized United Way enters the next phase of its 2019 fundraising campaign with a citywide block party combining First Thursday and live music on Walnut Street in the heart of Downtown Muncie. Local headliners, Cook and Belle, will take the Walnut Street stage at 7pm to get the celebration started. Last year, more than 5,000 people jammed the streets to dance, sing, and support United Way’s efforts to end generational poverty and change the trajectory of our community through literacy.

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership (MDDP), in partnership with Muncie Arts and Culture Council and Ball State University’s Departments of Fine Art and Music, present ArtsWalk 2019. ArtsWalk will be held in the streets of DWNTWN Muncie on Oct. 3rd from 5-9 p.m. Please join us for an exceptional evening of art, food and performances.

In addition to the well-established DWNTWN “First Thursday” art gallery openings, Ball State students and faculty will share a wealth of musical talent and visual artistry, including a pottery throwing demonstration, dance exhibition and an artwork sale. Music will be presented by a variety of Ball State ensemble groups.

Muncie Symphony Orchestra, sponsored Raymond James and Associates, will perform from 6-7 p.m at the corner of Walnut and Charles St.

Prime Trust will host a “Soup Crawl” benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank at a variety of DWNTWN and other locally owned restaurants. Tickets are available in advance at all Prime Trust branches and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Old National Bank and IU Health will sponsor "Just Desserts" a fundraiser benefiting The Muncie Boys and Girls Club. The event will be held at IVY Tech and tickets are available in advance.

Muncie’s YART 2019 will be held in conjunction with ArtsWalk. This guerrilla art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to the community, brings together artists and art patrons in a casual and unique setting. YART will be hosted at Canan Commons.

The Pumpkin Glow and Trail, featuring a Pumpkin Carving Contest and Best Business/Vendor display can be found throughout DWNTWN. Winners will be announced at 8:45pm from the Canan Commons Stage.

Brinkman Gallery is featuring a collection of Buddha’s and Asian art along with miniature Art Deco sculpted figurines as well as a miniature animal collection (over 100 pieces) and over 50 unique paperweights, all from Gay Nation's travels in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Also featuring a permanent collection of artist Kevin Campbell’s Waterscapes, meticulously painted water landscapes. At a distance they appear photorealistic, but as you approach the pattern of the waves begins to break down into abstract forms and shapes. Additionally, original DOG portraits that you can't believe are paintings as they are so lifelike, new puzzle pieces, and a section of Sweet Thursday by artist Kevin Campbell. Puzzles range from a single piece to a 730 piece puzzle. Come out and enjoy refreshments from 5-8pm.

Creative Legacy, Featuring the Art of Leon Crosby and Alex Hanson:

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, October 3 for the opening reception of Creative Legacy featuring art by Leon Crosby and Alex Hanson. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with October’s ArtsWalk events.

Leon Crosby and Alex Hanson are a teacher and student duo that have created a vibrant collection of acrylic paintings harnessing their combined passion for urban art. The collection Creative Legacy showcases colorful and illustrative pieces fusing street art styles with traditional and new innovative art techniques.

Leon Crosby has been teaching at Cornerstone Center for the Arts for nearly six years. He is an active artist in the community and demonstrates a strong passion for creating and teaching alike. Leon creates art incorporating a wide variety of styles. He has specialization in the areas of street and graffiti art, cartooning and animation styles, pop art, and traditional Japanese painting and kanji. Leon is passionate about the Muncie community and works every day to inspire creativity in others and to beautify the town he calls home.

Alex Hanson is a senior at Monroe Central High School in Farmland, IN. He began taking art classes with Leon at Cornerstone his freshman year of high school. He, like his teacher, has also demonstrated a strong ability and passion for creating art utilizing his love for comic book art and urban arts styles. He describes himself as someone who encourages being different and being true to one’s self.

Creative Legacy will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of October.

This free event will be held at Canan Commons during the Annual Artswalk event. Flynnville Train is an American country rock band and hometown boys. Their self-titled debut album was released on September 11, 2007, and it produced two singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. The band is composed of Brian Flynn (lead vocals), Brent Flynn (lead guitar), Joseph Shreve (bass guitar), and Tommy Bales (drums).

Double your pleasure, double your fun; it’s two, two, two shows in one!  Mark Sawrie will have two separate and disparate exhibits at Made in Muncie (or MIM) from October 3rd thru the 31st.  In the main gallery will be “…where I ended up”; an exhibit of photographs that honor the sublime and the banal visuals found in Muncie.  In the upstairs gallery will be “rated maRk”; an exhibit of photographs that combine humor and sharp edges; this will include symbolic still-lives, portraits of the psyche and digitally manipulate bodily fluids (also known as semen).  Opening reception will be on October 3rd from 5-8 p.m with a keg provided by The Guardian Brewing Company.

Conservation Tales
Tom McConnell, Associate Professor at Ball State University, will be at Madjax during ArtsWalk with children's books and samples of original paintings created by Conservation Tales, an immersive learning project that brought together faculty in the Department of Biology and the School of Art, with students in animation, visual communication (graphic design), photography, and elementary education to produce three volumes of children’s books about wildlife conservation featuring manatees, sea turtles, and seahorses. Books and the card game "Manatee Match" will be available for purchase.

Pre-registration must be complete by Monday October 1st. by filing out a registration online @ downtownmuncie.org/pumpkinglow. Jigyasa (meaning curiosity) — a show by Shantanu Suman, is a selection of type designs created in Devanagari script. The designs exhibited in this show are some of his favorite words that Shantanu learned from the Indian language and literature. An Inkling of Self: An exhibition of dynamic self-portraits created in pen, brush and ink by School of Art students in Intermediate Figure Drawing. YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons on Walnut Street, twice a year, Spring and Fall, on the First Thursday of every May and October. 

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Fall 2019 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the Fall 2019 ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 3rd, from 5-9pm. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater at the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana.

“Inamorata & the Floating City,” Featuring the Art of Sarah Richcreek

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 7 for the opening reception of Inamorata & the Floating Cityfeaturing art by Sarah Richcreek. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with November’s First Thursday events.

Intrigued by the connection between emotion and perception, artist Sarah Richcreek, found herself suddenly stricken by incessant waves of conflicting emotions and so began to write poetry as a cathartic way of healing.  She sent herself overseas to find peace in the things that she could not control and ended up in Venice; a majestic, proud island-city that is weather worn and salt blasted, but as luminous as a faceted jewel.  The collection of images and poems displayed here reflects Sarah Richcreek’s headspace in a time when her world was saturated with echoes of vivid memories, desolate stillness and beautiful decay.

Sarah Richcreek is a Delaware county native now living in Indianapolis.  She earned a BFA from Ball State University in 2008 with a concentration in metal arts and a minor in ceramics.  Sarah is a senior interpreter at Conner Prairie Living History Museum and has been learning and educating there since 2012.  A teacher at heart, her teaching experience spans from wheel-thrown pottery, silversmithing, open-fire cooking & baking and most recently yoga.  Her objective is to live with intention, unyielded self-acceptance and optimism to contribute to the growth of a community full of light-hearted beings who unabashedly share their passions with the world. 

Inamorata & the Floating Citywill be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of November.

Local artist Debra Gindhart will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with an assemblage art series "Puritan Pilgrims" and "Native American Indian Genocide.” Adding several new pieces of art to her current collection, "Columbus.” All pieces reflecting history in altered art, vibrant colors, and mixed media.

Debra has also created a beautiful Green Glam Studio jewelry earring collection using native beads and natural stones. They are Debra's maker homage to Native American Indian bead works and artisans celebrating history.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open an exhibition of new paintings by artist Genny Gordy, Thursday November 7, 5 – 8 pm.    The artist is beloved as a painter and art educator, remembered by many as an art teacher at Burris and the co-owner of Gordy Fine Art and Framing from 1989 – 2015.  Throughout the evening, she will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 she will speak briefly about her work.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

Ms. Gordy’s new paintings are small often referring to the chaos and creative energy of motherhood and mother earth.  Seed pods, stardust, sexual desire, and bleary-eyed motherly sleeplessness all occupy equal space expressing fertility and the persistence of life.  In her images, women wear the sun’s rays like a tiara equating their life-giving energy.   She works at a very fast pace with good humor and an uncanny instinct for organizing complex compositions.  “Genny confines her art to anything that happens in the universe,” says Carl Schafer.  “Like tiny universes, her pictures seem like accidents, but in fact they are highly ordered and the result of her wonderfully sophisticated sense of design.”

The exhibition will remain on view with works for sale throughout the month of November.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists, provides appraisals, and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art. How should (design) professionals work and operate in the contrasting, social circumstances, and economies the today’s world presents us? How do we (designers) understand those contemporary aspects? Displayed as part of the November 7th ArtsWalk at Muncie Makes Lab, “Taking Part In” is a building block of a bigger research undertaking into play and imagination, interactions and experiments as well as strategic narratives investigating meanings of “leftovers” through a series of ephemeral assemblies shaped with domestic remnants by an interdisciplinary group of exhibitors.

Stretching, folding, pleating, compressing, among other actions become the components of the design vocabulary and, essentially, the creative parts of the making of the structures that would allow the visitors to draw sound or to storage images in addition to interact with others in the same space and in a real time.

Research Project. No Labels / Design is a Tool of Action / Architecture is a Verb is a broad and effervescent speculative reservoir designated to undertake ventures related to modern reflections and contemporary works of spatial and cultural matters. The comprehension of envisaging the design discipline (architecture included) as a vigorous energy intends to spotlight the value of ‘construction’ -the tangible and/or the intellectual. That vigorous energy looks for projects like processes of thinking and making as well as it questions how those processes work in the global scenario of today.

“Field Guides”: An Exhibition by PlySpace Fellow Dana Lynn: “Field Guides” is a playful and boisterous exhibition exploring the artist’s belief in spirit guides. Spirit guides are believed to be supernatural beings that provide support, guidance and love when we need it most. Harper says, "this abstract idea is translated into layers of texture, pattern and color. Utilizing textiles, paper and plastics; aspects of personality, aura, consciousness and spirit are made visible. Each being borrows the form of celebratory objects, like piñatas, paper lanterns and pom poms. These playful forms are combined with ornamentation inspired by the growth of plants and flowers. Materials are dismantled and reconfigured into layers of a new imagined being, a soul without the body. Through this interpretation, the immaterial is made tangible.” 5-8 pm.

No Going Back, Featuring the Art of Olivia Willard:

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, December 5 for the opening reception of No Going Back art by Olivia Willard. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with December’s First Thursday events.

This mixed media collection draws inspiration from Willard’s early experiences in studying blind contour drawing and the process of fabric absorbing pigment. Wanting to capture the painstaking process of examining and capturing a subject all at once in another challenging medium, she began to explore stitchwork as it shares that “no going back” mentality. Willard loves watching the watercolor seep into a wet fabric and unpredictably stain it. This chaos is clarified with line work from one unbroken stitch on a sewing machine. Her favorite subjects are dream imagery and the human form. She has chosen to display the work in embroidery hoops so the viewer can clearly see how the fabric has absorbed paint, contrasted with the texture of the thread. The final product is a display of pigment and thread as vivid and wildly free as the unconscious mind.

Originally from Northwest Indiana, Olivia has lived in the Muncie area since 2006. She currently lives in Anderson with her Husband Zach and two children, Eloise (4) and Spencer (2). Olivia studied painting at Ball State University, but truly began her exploration of art at the age of three while taking classes at South Shore Arts. Having a lifelong passion for art and the unusual, she collects anything from strange old photographs and prints to doll parts. Olivia draws inspiration from her own journey of learning self-compassion, understanding the subconscious, and finding a place for bright saturated color in a bleak, grey state.

Monsters of the Midway - new dormitory ideas situated along the historic Midway at The University of Chicago. Thirteen unique proposals by 3rd year architecture students from the College of Architecture and Planning. The context for the proposed new designs would be along the historic Midway at the University of Chicago. Originally designed for the Worlds Columbian Exposition in 1893 by Frederick Law Olmstead, the Midway parkway is home to the south edge of the University of Chicago and new emerging architecture including the future Obama Presidential Center. The exhibition includes drawings, design diagrams, and 3d printed models of the students’ proposed structures. All are welcome, including high school or middle school students who might have an interest in pursuing a future in architecture and design.  5-8pm

Where the Wild Things Are, Featuring the Art of Mary Beth Reinhard:
Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, February 6 for the opening reception of Where the Wild Things Are featuring the photography of Mary Beth Reinhard. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with February’s First Thursday events.

Where the Wild Things Are, is a collection of North American animals found in their natural environment. Giving the animals the respect they deserve allows Reinhard to get close enough to develop a relationship with each animal which is often displayed in her images. From the vulnerability of the Deer, wisdom of the Raven, and rugged majesty of the Moose, it’s almost impossible to look at these images without feeling a connection to the featured creature. 

Every animal on our wild planet has its own distinct personality. The objective of Reinhard’s photography is to capture the personality of each animal as observed in the Wild. With a deep respect for wildlife, she often sits in awe of the many creatures which surround us. 

Mary Beth Reinhard, an Indiana native, has had a passion for the great outdoors and our animal friends from an early age. An adventurer at heart, Mary Beth enjoys scuba diving, snorkeling, sky diving, backpacking our National Parks, and many other outdoor pursuits. Mary Beth is a graduate of Ball State University with Master’s Degrees in Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling. She is a Certified Naturalist and enjoys studying our vast natural environment and its inhabitants. She resides in a log cabin in the woods just outside of Muncie, and is currently employed as a Mental Health Therapist in Private Practice. She also teaches Yoga and various dance classes at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Where the Wild Things Are will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of February.

As the Muncie Fieldhouse looks forward to hosting the 2020 Basketball Sectionals, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open the exhibition Our House: Muncie Fieldhouse, a community gathering place, Thursday February 6, 5 – 8 pm. Images will be drawn from the Ball State University’s Archives and Special Collections, a department of Ball State University Libraries.  Additional material will be contributed by Muncie Public Library.  Selected images will include photographs and architectural plans that celebrate the historical importance of the Fieldhouse as a sports arena and a community gathering place for car shows, union meetings, circus events, and concerts. 

Copies of images will be sold to benefit the Muncie Community Schools efforts to preserve the Muncie Fieldhouse and its history.Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

At 6:15 a spirited presentation will be led by Dale Basham, former principal of Muncie Central High School.  

Later at 7:30 Muncie Central varsity basketball will play Marion in the Fieldhouse. 

"Dale is the perfect person to convey the spirit we all feel for the Fieldhouse and Muncie Community Schools," said Gordy co-owner Carl Schafer.  "Throughout the evening and during Dale's presentation we will be encouraging everyone to go to the game for this important annual rivalry."

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 5 for the opening reception of A Never-Ending Quest featuring the art of Shannon Mehaffey. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with March’s First Thursday events.

This collection of new mixed-media artworks by artist Shannon Mehaffey is a culmination of new processes and themes the artist has discovered through experimentation, meditation, and dedication to the study of art. Inspired by the fantastical landscapes, items, and stories found within the digital realm of video game franchises such as “Skyrim,” “Death Stranding,” and “Fallout.”  The artist has dedicated her artistic practice to exploring new art mediums and processes. Born out of the artist's long lost love of analog darkroom photography, this body of work is about learning to control the alchemy of the papers and inks using solvents, moving ink around the page in a totally uncontrolled manner, and finding order within the chaos.

Shannon Mehaffey is a Visual Artist living in Muncie, Indiana. She earned her BFA in Photography in Fine Arts at Ball State University in 2010, she currently teaches Watercolors, Drawing, Landscape Painting, and Mixed Media at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her partner, her two dogs, binging Netflix, and playing video games.

A Never-Ending Quest will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of March.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts, in partnership with PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union, will host the Young Artist Exhibition on Thursday, March 5th for school-age children in Delaware County. The show will feature the artwork of students in kindergarten through twelfth grades who reside in or attend school in Delaware County. The public reception on March 5th from 5:30 to 7:30p.m. will take place in the Colonnade Room at Cornerstone Center for the Arts with awards being announced at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This is the fourth year for the show which will feature both 2D and 3D artwork submitted by hundreds of local students. Entries will be placed into six categories: kindergarten-second, third- fifth, sixth-eighth 2D, sixth-eighth 3D, ninth-twelfth 2D, and ninth-twelfth 3D. Submissions will be accepted at Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ second floor information desk from Wednesday, February 12 through Friday, February 21. Teachers may submit up to 10 pieces of work or students may submit up to three of their own pieces with assistance from a parent or guardian. Prize packages, including cash awards, will be awarded for first, second, third, and honorable mentions in each category. A panel of community judges will select winners prior to the public reception.

Winning artwork will be on display at Cornerstone Center for the Arts during the month of April. The opening reception for the winners showcase will be held on Thursday, April 2 in which all winners are invited to attend and share their work with the public. Additionally, winning artwork may be displayed at PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union’s three locations.

The Fickle Peach (21+)

Madeline Douglass will show her work at The Fickle Peach. Madeline grew up in Muncie, Indiana, and then attended university at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. She majored in screenwriting, but held close to her original love of drawing.

This collection is a few of her studies of human anatomy. They are largely mixed media – including conte crayon, charcoal, watercolor, colored pencil, and ink.

In these pieces, Madeline observed and attempted to capture the grace and fluidity of the human form. She sat for several hours, just about every Friday and Saturday, for three years, staring at naked people, doing her damnedest to replicate every little nook and cranny. She was forced to squint at these poor models as her professors tried to get her to see shadow shapes and highlights. Madeline had her own personal style of drawing ripped apart and rebuilt to someone else’s standards.

“A Little Bit OM and A Lot Googly Eyes” is local artist Debra Gindhart’s March First Thursday gallery walk show. Indianapolis artist and Ball State graduate, Neal Soley, presents Egocentric: A Pop Up Show. Soley’s company, The Tulip Factory, offers an array of products based upon his distinct style that is best described as an expression of his individuality.  Egocentric features over 25 works based on The Tulip Factory’s logo, including a photo collaboration with Las Vegas based photographer, Michael Hurley. Through the manipulation of TTF’s logo, Egocentric offers works that are a pursuit of self through the exploration of media. “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors” is the first in a series of exhibitions by Leslie Price to examine the roots of culture and our relation to the past. The “Celtic Roots” show features images of Scotland- from where my ancestors originated- before they migrated to Ireland. Perhaps yours did too. Here you will get a chance to walk the ancient passageways of far off castles, explore a rare class of Neolithic henge monument, and meander down the street that inspired J.K. Rowling’s Diagon Alley. Come and follow in the footsteps of our ancestors- through the winding green hills and lush river valleys, past the castle gate and up the spiral staircase cut out of solid stone. Adventure awaits! Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early with Leslie and the nice folks at the Muncie Map Company. You might even make some new friends. 

Leslie Price is an independent Historic Preservation Specialist in Muncie, Indiana. She has a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Ball State University with minors in urban planning and energy studies, and an Associate of Applied Science in hands-on building preservation from Belmont Technical College. Leslie is a painter; writer, activist, photographer and craftsman. She has a unique vision of the evolution of culture, which is reflected in the texture, details and composition of her images.  Leslie’s dedication to arts and the environment is evident in her pursuit of the perfect perspective. This is her fourth time participating in First Thursday

Announcing April's Virtual First Thursday!

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, there will not be First Thursday events held downtown for April. Instead, we will hold a Virtual First Thursday in which we will post a photo gallery on our Facebook page that features work by local artists and venues! If you would like to submit work for Virtual First Thursday, please email up to 3 photos of your art as well as caption information to Dr. Natalie Phillips at nephillips@bsu.edu or send a private message to First Thursday’s Facebook page at (www.facebook.com/FirstThursdayMuncie). You may include pricing and contact information for your work as well. Please submit your photos by 5pm on Tuesday, March 30th to be included in the Virtual First Thursday gallery.
