Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open a sale of ink drawings by Jeff Brackett, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Ball State. Others are small at 8” x 8”. The show’s title is Forgetting the Ox. Brackett compares his process to the Buddhist metaphor of Ox-herding where he works toward eliminating the distinction between himself and the art he makes. The show will open at a reception on Thursday September 2 from 5 – 8 pm. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be on hand to engage with visitors. The show will remain on view until Saturday October 2 when he will return for a closing event from 1 – 3 pm.At 6:15 the artist will give a 10 minute presentation about his work and answer questions.

Gindhart:
Debra Gindhart Dragoo is celebrating her birthday EARLY AGAIN! Local artist, arts educator and community arts advocate invites you to join her as she celebrates 69!Please stop by Gindhart at Madjax and give her some LOVE. Debra is a spoken word artist as well, it has been my voice and poetry flowing through the paint—be it aerosol, acrylics, or otherwise—it’s tactile and telling. Her work will tell the story of a young girl-artist-woman, giving voice to such issues as childhood sexual abuse/the degradation of women and girls, divorce, cancer—it’s funding, research and cure, chemical effects on the planet, hunger and stardom, all told through vibrant colors sprinkled with spray art. Always outspoken and creative, she’s poured her energy, over the years, into various projects, both personal and community-wide. She’s practiced her love of spoken-word poetry at various First Thursday (Muncie’s art night) events, and has showcased her Green Glam Studio jewelry line of environmentally friendly jewelry.
Debra believes that life passes from our art. We evolve with age and, hence, our style and medium evolve. My art is storytelling using strokes and spray, my art has been fiber and paint and public. Through years of community outreach arts programming, I hold multi-generational projects close to my artist heart. Art is in my spirit, resounding from my soul.
Muncie Artist’s Guild

Muncie Artist’s Guild Artist of the Month: Congratulations to Deborah Brown for having won the Best-of-Show award at the Muncie Artists Guild’s 2021 annual exhibit “Artists Unmasked” which took place at the Minnetrista Cultural Center. Deborah’s winning artwork is an acrylic painting titled “The Gathering” which the judge, John C. Kelty of Fort Wayne, described as having been created with an extremely well-done painterly technique as well as with a masterful use of contrast. Deborah’s award included the honor of becoming the guild’s September Artist of the Month and the payment of her 2022 membership.Deborah is a Muncie native and completed her graduate and MA degrees at Ball State University, as well as a certification in Gifted Education. Before retiring, she taught school in southern Indiana, Georgia, Florida, then once again in Indiana.
After retiring, she pursued her lifelong love of art, attending several workshops, some of which were in Maine, Nantucket, and southern Indiana (New Harmony). Some of the workshops were taught by accomplished artists such as Thomas Dunlay, Pam Newell, Susie Rachels, Beth Schwier, Jim Faulkner, and Terry Armstrong.
Besides painting, Deborah enjoys spending time with her family (especially her grandchildren!) and traveling to various parts of the country gathering inspiration from nature and God's handiwork.
One of her favorite quotes is, "You are never too old to become what you might have been."

Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo annual exhibit addressing Native American Indian Genocide Month during ArtsWalk 2021. Abolish Columbus Day and start celebrating the native cultures. The holiday’s popularity has been waning for some time. It has already been renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a reminder that Columbus’s voyages set off a chain of events that wreaked havoc on native populations in the New World. Columbus Day’s sentiments are superfluous. Instead, let’s focus on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. Let’s start reimagining that future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall art with Anti Columbus and pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art. The artist's Green Glam Studio jewelry collection will also be featured. 2nd floorPlyspace:

Muncie Arts/ Plyspace welcome Plyspace Resident Jordan Delzell:PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) welcomes Fall 2021 Resident Jordan Delzell. Jordan Delzell is a visual artist, researcher and recycler. Through foraging, collecting and scavenging material she reroutes items from the waste stream to sites of deep study and care. She creates objects, installations, images and interactions. While in residence Jordan will offer multiple opportunities to learn more about the art of paper recycling.
For First Thursday, Jordan Delzell will transform the PlySpace gallery (608 E Main Street, Muncie) into a recycling center where the Muncie community can drop off paper materials to be recycled and learn about paper-making with recycled materials. Stop by from 5-8pm.
About the Artist:
Born in Morning Sun, Iowa, Jordan Delzell moved to New York City to study Integrated Design, a practice merging visual art, design and psychology. In 2017 she lived and worked at Elsewhere Museum, a museum and collective living experiment in a former thrift store in North Carolina. In 2019 she relocated to Kansas City, where she has continued work focused on paper-making with recycled paper. She has facilitated the collective recycling of paper through poetic workshops in unconventional spaces: garages turned schools and storefronts turned art galleries. “Ronn Brown – Portraits”: Gordy Fine Art and Framing celebrates our exhibition of photographs by career photographer Ronn Brown. The exhibition opening party, with live music by Dan Wright and his guitar, is free to the public on Thursday March 3 from 5 – 8 pm. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be on hand to engage with visitors. The show will remain on view until April 2.A native of East Central Indiana, Mr. Brown was based in Los Angeles for over 20 years. In Los Angeles, he focused mainly on photographing musicians, actors and models, and often worked for producers in the film and music industries. This kind of photography requires superb technical skills in operating the camera and lights, but he became highly sought after because of his bold imagination placing his subjects in inventive poses and dress. As his career progressed, he became increasingly interested in his rapport with the models and he would engage with them on a more personal level. To achieve specific lighting effects, he will rent rooms with windows positioned for just the right kind of natural light. The exhibition at Gordy is a selection of 20 images made in the past six years showing Mr. Brown’s unique talent for drawing out emotions that are both expressive and contemplative. Most of the portraits on view were made working intensively with the model during extended studio sessions in both Los Angeles and Muncie. Some are more spontaneous images of people he finds in public places.
In 2020, Brown returned to Indiana and is now living in Muncie. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1997, he attended Ball State in the photojournalism and art departments. He credits much of his career success to Jack’s Camera Shop in Downtown Muncie where he taught lighting classes for 12 years. There refined his studio skills that made his eventual career one of many that were launched at Jack’s.
The show will be on view with works for sale through April 2. Muncie Artist’s Guild: Artist-of-the-Month:
Jean McCauley is an award-winning artist who has been a member of the Muncie Artists Guild for over twenty years. She paints predominately in oils and pastels, but occasionally uses acrylics and watercolor. Her works are primarily landscapes, but she has more recently been painting a variety of dog portraits for family and friends. Jean has exhibited in many shows, receiving numerous awards, and is a member of Richmond Art Museum, Art Association of Henry County (Best of Show in 2021), Art Association of Randolph County (Awards of Excellence), Minnetrista, Muncie Art Students’ League (where she served as president in 2015 and co-president in 2021), and the David Owsley Museum of Art Alliance to name a few. Jean has studied with a wide variety of well known and highly respected artists, including Carol Strock-Wasson, Mary Ann Davis, and Pam Newell. She also has been a part of several interesting art projects throughout the years including the Muncie Artists Guild’s mural paintings (one located in City Hall, the other in the Arts & Journalism Building at Ball State University). In 2014 Jean was one of 14 artists selected to paint a violin for the 50th Anniversary of Emens Auditorium. In 2016 she was selected to participate in the Art of Sail Exhibition in Miami Florida which featured 30 artists from throughout the US. Each artist was provided a 36x36” segment of sailcloth from a retired jib sail. Additionally, Jean accompanied her son, David, on Artist in Residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and at the Santa Fe Art Institute. She continues to paint and show her work throughout central Indiana. Her paintings have been inspired by the beauty and simplistic aspects of nature and the world in which we live. Jean hopes her work evokes a pleasing and meaningful calm, capturing a sense of peace for a quieter, more thoughtful, almost forgotten time.Jean McCauley’s work will be shown at the following locations:

Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open an exhibition and sale of new paintings and sculpture by Alfredo Marín-Carle, Thursday April 7th, 5-8 pm. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. At 6:15 the artist will give a 10-15 minute presentation about his work and answer questions.
Visions, the title of the exhibit, states simply that these works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies. “In the process of creation, I experience the Buddhist concept of interdependence,” says Marín-Carle, “that nothing exists on its own.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He uses stencils to apply forms and shapes, then rubs them with chemicals and carves deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. In this way he is exploring the creation and destruction always going on around us.
The show will be on view with works for sale through May 28.

Diane is a painter, enamelist, and teacher, and her work will be on display in various locations throughout the city including Old National Bank, Northwest Bank, Hazelwood Hair Salon, Rosebud Coffee House, and Vera Mae’s.Diane’s life as an artist has evolved over 50 years, yet the source of inspiration has remained constant. She is affected by her surroundings where she lives and works in her home studio on a lake in North Anderson. The abundant ever-present fodder, wildlife, deer, blue herons, eagles, osprey, waterfowl, and fish provide a constant source of tranquility, and subject matter, which is revealed through the exploration and use of color in multiple layers of paint or enameling, (which is Glass fired onto metal at 1,450 degrees.) Other sources for subject matter come from her dedication to serving others through a food assistance program at Trinity Episcopal church. She is energized by sharing her experiences through teaching and displaying her art.
Diane is a graduate from Ball State University in 1988. She continued her graduate work through 1995. She is an art teacher with an emphasis in painting and metal design and enameling. William Mueller is an MFA Candidate at Ball State University. His thesis exhibition ‘Operating Cost’ is a collection of works with a narrative of how public relation, marketing, and advertising campaigns can persuade the public opinion and how we as consumers are to handle that information. The work is constructed primarily with cast concrete, a material that is known for its aesthetic value in modern architecture. This material is viewed as strong, resilient, and sustainable when in fact it can be brittle, require frequent maintenance, and is the third leading contributor to greenhouse gases. Our perception of the world around us is not always correct and quite often, it is shaped by firms that seek to do so for ulterior motives. This work challenges the viewer to think critically about the information that we take for granted.PlySpace

The Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month is Marta Stephens!
Her work will be on view at the following locations downtown:
Vera Mae's, Northwest Bank, Old National, Rose Bud Coffeehouse, and Parlour.Marta Stephens was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has called Indiana her home since the age of four. Her formal art education includes courses at U.C.L.A, the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and Ball State University. However, while at Ball State, she changed her major and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Public Relations in 2001.
Marta has been painting for over 40 years. She is an active member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2018 and has won several awards for her artwork. Her painting style has continuously evolved through experimentation and studying works of contemporary and traditional impressionist artists. She remains open to learning new techniques. Thus, this self-taught artist’s style is in a constant state of development.
She has worked with a variety of mediums including ink, washes, clay, and charcoals. Several years later she began exploring oils and acrylics. The subject matters of her paintings are primarily still lifes and landscapes. Gardening is one of her other creative passions, so inspiration often comes from nature and the study of light, shadows, and textures.
Marta is also a published author of crime mystery novels all of which have received several awards and recognitions over the years. Her recent publication in 2021 is an anthology of short mysteries. Marta retired in 2020 from Ball State University, Human Resources, after 41 years. Since then, she has pursued her life-long passion—art.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing is honored to celebrate the 5th anniversary of On the Mark, For the City, the colorful mural on the Mark III Tap Room, with an exhibition and sale of artworks by the four artists who planned, designed, and painted that mural. The opening party for this exhibition will be First Thursday, June 2 from 5 to 8 pm with an artists’ talk by Faith Kellermeyer and Jannell Summers at 6:15.Following the tragic events at the Orlando Pulse Nightclub in 2016, JoAnna Darda, Braydee Euliss, Faith Kellermeyer, and Jannell Summers were inspired to work hand-in-hand to create a piece of public art that would illustrate Muncie’s acceptance of and support for people of all backgrounds. These four women artists raised the funds, figured out the logistics, designed and painted the mural. Throughout the process they invited the community to help in the creation of the mural.

We are happy to share that Sheila Piazza is our MAG artist of the month for July. Her work will be displaying at Northwest Bank, Old National Bank, Parlour Salon, Rosebud Coffee House and Vera Mae's Bistro.Sheila finds inspiration in the mundane and the everyday with its opportunity to pause and reflect. This could be the distorted world inside a reflection, the mad swirl in moving water, or the play of shapes hidden in shadows. Primarily a still life artist, she works in colored pencil and oil paint. Recently, taking on the challenge of landscape, she discovered the color green to be quite confrontational.
Teaching art has been a big part of her life. Students have ranged from preschool to adult, with middle school being a favorite. Awards included Indiana Middle School Art Teacher of the Year, Delaware Community Schools Teacher of the Year, Indiana Youth Institute Fellowship, National Marie Walsh Sharp Teacher/Artist Fellowship, Indiana Youth Institute Associate, and numerous local, state, and national grants.
Her work has been shown in the Indiana State Museum, Cynergy three state Traveling Exhibit, Anderson Museum of Art, Minnetrista, Blackford County Art Center, Portland Art Center, Indiana State Fair Professional Division, NAEA Electronic Art Gallery, Hancock County Art Association, and ArtWorks Gallery.

Debra Gindhart Dragoo:
Debra is a local social commentary artist, arts educator and arts advocate will feature collage and assemblage art pieces in her exhibit “TOOLS 4 SCHOOLS.” Debra believes that guns have no place in our schools. We must reduce the possibility of any gunfire in schools, rather concentrating on ways to keep all guns off school property. Ensuring the safety of children and school employees, school administrators should focus on measures that will create safe and supportive learning environments for students, faculty, and staff. For the last 20 years, our students, educators, and parents have lived with the reality of school shootings. Meanwhile, America’s gun violence epidemic, in the form of mass shootings, gun homicides, non-fatal assaults, unintentional discharges, and firearm suicides, has been infecting America’s schools. The failure of our leaders to address the root causes of school gun violence from all angles is having lasting consequences for millions of American children.
We need meaningful action to keep our schools safe—action that addresses what we know about gun violence in America’s schools and prevents it from occurring in the first place. It’s time for our leaders to adopt a multi-faceted approach that provides school communities with the tools they need to intervene and prevent school-based gun violence.
We can’t let risky ideas, like arming teachers, dominate the debate. Put simply, an armed teacher cannot, in a moment of extreme duress and confusion, transform into a specially trained law enforcement officer. In reality, an untrained armed teacher introduces risk to student safety on a daily basis.

Anita Jones is Muncie Artists Guild August Artist of the Month:
I consider myself a contemporary surrealist. I like to work with colored Prismacolor pencils and ink on colored grounds. I often juxtaposition elements, experiment with planes and shapes. Most often there are natural elements in my work…plants…water… small insects….and almost all my work will have a moon or sun or planet in the images.
I have a B.S. and an M.A., in art education from Ball State University and I taught art at the elementary and high school levels for 23 years at Liberty Perry Schools. I received a fellowship from the Council on Basic Education, funded by the National Endowment for the arts and the Getty Foundation, and was an art educator delegate to China with 12 other National educators to visit several schools and universities in 3 major Chinese cities.I was also a fellow for the Indiana Writing Project and a writing consultant for our school in writing across the curriculum. Other awards; several Bell Education awards, the National Wildlife Federation grant, and Ball State Alumni’s innovative teaching award.
Currently, I’m writing and illustrating and exhibiting my new work.

I find etchings and woodcuts are ways to extend my drawings. I can take the best information from each of my drawings and combine the more successful elements, increase the scale, experiment with color, and transform the whole thing into ink. I appreciate the heightened impact Relief Prints impart to the original drawing… what may have been indefinite graphite scribbles turns into definite black lines and shapes. He will open a new exhibit in Muncie, Indiana at Gordy Fine Art and Framing on Thursday December 1, 5 – 8 pm. The show of signed prints will include some of his most iconic album art together with rare originals. Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. The exhibit will be on view with framed works for sale in the gallery and at gordyframing.com through January 28, 2023.
Originally from Toronto, Syme has lived in New Castle, Indiana off and on since 1987. When working in Indiana, he collaborated with a Muncie-based photographer for set pieces, worked with local people as models, and used nearby architecture to construct the final images for his work.
Syme began his career in the music business playing keyboards and creating the album art for the Ian Thomas Band. The manager for the Thomas band also managed Rush. In 1975 he and Rush drummer Neil Peart asked Syme to do the album art for the Caress of Steel album. This launched Syme’s career, now spanning nearly 50 years. In Peart’s introduction to Syme’s recent book Art of Rush, he said that Syme creates with “both talent and love.” He praised “Hugh’s eye for proportion and ‘negative space’ – seldom understood as luxury, as space always does to humans.”
Syme’s clients include Time Warner, Disney, Forbes, NFL, Virgin, David Geffen, Mercury, SONY and many record labels too numerous to list. Syme has been nominated for the Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) a total of 18 times. He won for Best Album Graphics or Design in 1982 for Rush’s Moving Pictures, 1986 for Rush’s Power Windows, 1989 for Ian Thomas’s Levity, 1990 for Rush’s Presto, and 1992 for Rush’s Role the Bones.
Since 2020, he has co-hosted the popular “Music Buzz” podcast with fellow Hoosiers Dane Clark, drummer for John Mellencamp, and Andy Wilson, president of Elevate Entertainment. musicbuzzzpodcast.com

The Muncie Artist Guild’s “Artist of the Month” for December 2022 is Rosaline FranklinRosaline’s artist statement:
"In my eyes there is nothing quite like looking out toward the horizon and taking in the beauty that can be found in nature! In elementary school, I quickly fell in love with art class and always looked forward to painting. I took this love home with me and begged my dad to buy me some paints! I would try my best with my store brand water colors and put on little art shows for my family. When I was a little older I began to appreciate nature more and more before discovering “The Joy of Painting'' hosted on PBS by none other than Bob Ross. The way he was able to create whole landscape paintings from nothing in the span of thirty minutes was inspiring! I decided I wanted to try my hand at wet on wet but found oils too expensive and settled on some acrylic paints. I can’t quite mimic the look of Bob Ross style paintings but I really enjoy trying my best to make acrylics look like oils!
This particular series of paintings combined warm and cool colors! Winter is my favorite season and I wanted to create snowy landscapes without using too much white. I settled with multiple hues of grays and blues for my cool colors and exciting oranges and yellows for my warmer colors. I love acrylic paints because little mistakes can be corrected quickly and I can come back sooner than with oils to add more to my canvas!"

Muncie Artist’s Guild

The Muncie Artist Guild’s Artist of the Month for January 2023 is Terri Best:"In February of 2021, my niece was killed in a horrific accident and God gave me a vision to paint. Having never painted on canvas before, I turned to YouTube and Muncie Artist Guild for help and painted an Angel rising to heaven as His vision had implied. I gave the angel painting to my brother and haven’t stopped painting.
My husband encourages me to paint to find my unique style. (And probably because my friends pay me to paint for them.) I continue to paint because it relaxes me, I enjoy it and it's a challenge me to try something new. I have painted over 400 paintings since starting to paint in February of 2021. I haven't found my unique style yet, but I like to use wood veneer and aluminum foil to paint old barns, so far that’s my favorite. Thank you for this opportunity to share my paintings."

I find that science considers facts, and the psyche discloses the mysteries of life. I am not searching for truth, but for a secret.”
Scott Anderson is a Professor of Painting at Ball State University since 1995 and has exhibited professionally for the past 30 years. “My paintings attempt to show idea systems in conflict through a mixture of styles, surfaces, symbols, appropriated images, and forms that have been assembled into a contrasting visual stew.”

Our Artist of the Month for the Muncie Artists Guild for February 2023 is Jennifer "Jennie" Irving.
Jennifer Irving is a Delaware County resident. She started working in watercolor and acrylic painting in the past few years after retiring from her career in Massage Therapy. She has always enjoyed working with her hands and creating. For her 50th birthday, she decided to gift herself a watercolor course and supplies with local artist Cindy Norrick-Turner. Jennie found she really enjoyed the merging of the colors and results which could arise. She loves working in a non-traditional style and likes alcohol inks and yupo paper for their magical movement and vibrancy. She continued to take various classes and explored mediums and techniques.Previous avenues of expression have included weaving, stained glass and jewelry making. She has a love of color and textures. An avid gardener, Jennie notices the shadows and structure in nature and finds joy and solace in natural flowing designs."

Debra Miller is the Muncie Artist Guild’s “Artist of the Month.”Through my art I endeavor to express my feelings of joy and awe at the beauty of nature (including mankind) through the use of color and light. I am not tied to any particular technique. In a day and age that is centering on destructive elements, I hope to “remind us how to embrace this beautiful broken world once again with an open heart” (Terry Tempest Williams). Painting in the mediums of acrylics, watercolors, and oil paints allows me to build my color, light, and depth through layering, translucency, and value changes.
Having received my BA and MA degrees (fine arts and education) from Anderson University and ISU respectively, I taught art in the South Vermillion School Corporation (and previously at Southwest Parke) until retirement. After retirement I taught art in Madison County and Jay County. These positions included kindergarten through high school art. These experiences impressed me with the pure joy that children have with the creative process itself and that you should paint what you love or what moves you.
Active in the Wabash Valley Art Guild, I exhibited art in Terre Haute and surrounding areas, taking several ribbons. I painted two murals in the area: one was painted with a fellow artist at Union Hospital’s chapel and another was a panel section at the Saratoga Restaurant (both under the name of Bonness). I have done commissioned pieces in Vermillion County, Vigo County, and Delaware County. I am currently active in the Muncie Artists Guild and Alcove Artists.
