Gallery 308
308 E MainWork by 2012 Paper Chase Show "Best in Show" winner Ann Johnson. “There is So Much I Want to Say to You” is a collection of pictures Ann has painted since she sold F.B. Fogg in 2008.
What began as desire for watercolor paper which led her, as a young mother to take the first mixing of lint from her dryer to form an early handmade paper, blossomed into a 24-year career as handmade paper artist F.B. Fogg. According to Johnson, “In my not so- quaint past, I took paper further than it should go… clocks sold in every state in the union, sculptures in 14 countries, and enough golden retrievers to form an avalanche of paper. Then I sold Fogg. When you experience loss or change, you surprise yourself. Sometimes what matters is not what one gives, but what one gives up. Now, I have returned to my 'roots', so to speak, and am once more a painter, a colorist. So painting is a delight for me and best yet, I paint only to enjoy the art. What a delightful time I am having!"
Gallery 308 will also be hosting art making activities for all ages with aerosols, chalk, and the ever-popular squirt gun painting. Across Main Street, members of the BSU FreshstART group and other local artists will be "chalking the block". Be sure to check out their art!
In case you miss the gallery opening, the exhibit continues through October 26. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.
10 Year Gallery Anniversary - 224 E MainTen years ago, Brian and Genny Gordy realized a dream by turning their oversized frame shop showroom into a legitimate art gallery. The Boyce Block space already offered high ceilings and hardwood floors, and underneath layers of wallpaper, a stunning plaster wall, authentically distressed by the centuries. A nifty hanging system was installed to protect that wall, and a gallery was born. The first artist was Gala Bent, who had worked for the Gordy’s while attending Ball State University as an art major. The opening reception was held on the first Thursday in October 2002.
The Gordy’s – also graduates of the BSU Art Department – had a vision about fine art, fine handcrafted picture framing, and the downtown Muncie art scene. They were certainly not alone in that vision, and a decade later, “First Thursdays” is a term that seldom needs explanation. Scores of art lovers mark their calendars to visit various gallery spaces downtown for an evening of exhibits of mostly local works that include oil paintings, watercolors, prints, jewelry, and a robust selection of pottery. Music is often a part of that scene, running the gamut from tuba ensembles to drum circles.
“It is fulfilling,” offers Brian Gordy, “to live in a town that embraces its art and artists, not only by showing up at the various exhibits, but by collecting works by those artists, many of whom are recognized far beyond the boundaries of Delaware County.” The Gordy gallery represents twenty two local and regional artists.
The owner himself will be the exhibitor on the wall for the month, opening during the annual ArtsWalk event on October 4, 2012. Designated an Indiana Artisan artist, Gordy has won numerous awards and is included in galleries beyond his own. For this show, titled, “Recent Watercolors,” twenty new paintings with varying subjects will be hung, including complex compositions with intense colors and the first of a new series. The new pieces are semi-abstract images inspired by roots, riverbanks and reflective waters, and will hang alongside the final pieces of a turtle series the artist has been painting for the past seven years. States Gordy, “I consider these five images to be the most challenging and aesthetically successful of the turtle series. They also mark its conclusion.”
The evening’s agenda includes a short talk and introduction of artists at 6 PM, “Meet and Greet the Artists,” and photo op. “For any contribution, guests may have a picture taken with one of the artists. Greg Harty and Jack’s Camera Shop are donating services for this fun event, the proceeds of which will go to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank,” Genny explains. “They are doing The Soup Crawl again during ArtsWalk, and we wanted to help with their mission. We thought this would be a memorable way for the artists and the gallery to give back to the community that sustains us.”
Visitors may also register to win a $200 gift certificate for custom picture framing during the 5 to 9 PM time frame. For children, there will be a “Fill in the Famous Frame” coloring sheets. Music will be provided by Mike Statler, also of Jack’s Camera Shop.
“We started a gallery because it was an important aspect of our personal “ideal community” concept. That others are encouraged by our efforts is the icing on our anniversary cake,” offers Genny.
ArtsWalk Agenda at Gordy Fine Art 2012:
- 5 PM – Exhibit, “Recent Watercolors,” opens
- 6 PM - Genny will give a short talk and introduce the artist, Brian Gordy and other GFAF artists
- 6:15 to 7 PM - Meet and Greet artists and photo op for a donation to be given to 2nd Harvest
- 8 PM - Drawing for $200 gift certificate for picture framing (need not be present to win)
- All evening - Fill in the Famous Frame Coloring sheets for Children and Interested Adults
- 9 PM – Closing
- Intermittent: Woody Statler live music

YART - A Yard Sale for Art!
5:00pm to 12:42pm @
Downtown
Old National Lot
The Spring 2014 Muncie YART will be held on Thursday, May 1st (5-9pm) and is open and free to everyone! :)
YART is a Yard Sale for Art. We keep the yard sale vibe going by having the sale outdoors and keeping all art priced under $40. I hold YART twice a year, in May and October, in Downtown Muncie, in the parking lot of Old National Financial on the corner of Walnut and Charles Streets.
There is no charge to sell at YART, and YART does not take a cut of your sales. Each artist has about a parking space to set up in. Artists manage their own sales and set up their own displays. It's often very windy, so keep that in mind. Many artists make art live during YART!
YART is an all-volunteer/no-budget event and I am very grateful to Cheryl Crowder of the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership for support and the donation of YART poster printing, Old National Financial for the donated use of their parking lot, and to The Artist Within, Inc. for being great YART neighbors!
The 2014 Spring Muncie YART will be held at the same time as the May 2014 First Thursday Gallery Walk throughout Downtown Muncie. There is a LOT going on with art shows, live music, food, and community fellowship. The Caffeinery has just opened across the street from the YART lot too. This will be a really fun night for everyone and it's great to support local artists!
Please "Share" this and encourage artists to sell at YART and buyers to shop at YART! :)

The opening will start at 5pm with refreshments and an artists meet and greet.

Circles and BirdsAn exhibit featuring artist Sally Myers opens First Thursday at Gallery 308 on May 1. Circles and Birds is a collection of metal scultpures created from steel rings Myers found at a scrap yard in Muncie. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
Myers said, "I love everything about these rings - the uneven shape, the empty space inside, the opportunity to add objects at the top, bottom and sides, the material - steel - to which I can weld other steel shapes. I also like the fact that they can be displayed outdoors and develop a beautiful rust patina."
She added, "I make this work by working at a coal forge, heating the steel rods to yellow heat, then forming the pieces with a hand hammer or power hammer. I cut the steel birds from steel sheets using a plasma torch. There is quite a lot of magic in working with hot steel. After you heat and bend the steel, even after it is cold, you can appreciate that it was once fluid and able to bend which I think of as 'remembering when it was hot'."
Myers retired from teaching art at Ball State University a few years ago and currently lives on a farm in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia with a dog, cat, and a few guinea fowl. Her work has been shown in exhibitions all over the United States including the 27th International Exhibition on Animals in Art, Earth, Wheel and Fire, the International Juried Ceramics Exhibition, and the International Juried Exhibition at The Herbst International Exhibition Hall at the Presidio of San Francisco, California.
Myers is also back in Muncie to celebrate the dedication April 30th of the three panel steel sculpture titled ” Growing through the Changes”, she created located on the grounds of City Hall. The sculpture was commissioned and funded by Gallery 308, its members and from major funding from the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County and donated to the City of Muncie and its residents.
The exhibit will be on display through May 30. The gallery’s hours are Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free.

Acrylic Energy PaintingsMuncie landscape architect Eric Ernstberger spends a lot of time with his head in the clouds. His work requires a “view from the top” of cityscapes, which he then helps design for ease of travel and beauty. It is not surprising to find that his day work influences his art, which he creates mostly at night. As the rest of his family sleeps, the artist applies copious amounts of acrylic paint to thick watercolor paper in swirls, streaks and cross hatches that become sunset deserts, African landscapes or lavender-lit interiors. One painting, titled, “Afar,” could be a modern take on the famous Monet water lily series. The artist delivers just enough; it is then up to the viewer to decipher the rest.
Art is a form of communication, after all, and tells a story that can only be told in that medium, at that time, by that artist. Ernstberger is deeply connected to the surface of our planet and sees it with eyes educated to know how humans interact with the hills, mountains, plains and waters of our world, for better or worse. His, “American Maelstrom,” delivers an ominous message via active strokes of red, white and blue with occasional merges into that welcomed benevolent lavender. The artist points out that his work offers “intense abstraction or new perspectives on familiar subjects.”
Ernstberger will speak about his latest work, and answer questions during his opening reception on Thursday, May 1, 2014. The short talk will begin at 6:15 PM in the main gallery, and the public is invited.

The Photovoice event is a participatory photo exhibition to be held on May 1, 2014 from 5 to 7 pm at Ivy Tech Community College’s Patterson Building, third floor ballroom. The Photovoice exhibition is the culmination of a research project carried out by six graduate students in the EDCC 641 course who worked with administrators and students at Ivy Tech Community College involved in LIFE STEPS, a federally-funded TRIO and student support services program that provides students with tutoring, counseling, and instructional services for student success. Through a process of providing six Ivy Tech students with disposable cameras, talking with the students about their photos, and analyzing the conversations to gain understanding about students’ experiences, the EDCC 641 class—in collaboration with Ivy Tech—has organized the Photovoice exhibition as a way to showcase the participatory action research. The exhibition will display the students’ photos, include refreshments, and serve as an interactive space for dialogue and reflection. All Muncie, Ivy Tech Community College, and Ball State University community members are welcome to attend and engage the students at this event. PerilousArtist Cassy Hoffine explains that "'Perilous' is a reminder of simpler times. When we were children, our imaginations roamed free. Now, adulthood overshadows the days of imaginative playing. Something that was once innocent and fun is too unpredictable: a child could get hurt if they are not protected from every risk. I photographed children in out-of-the ordinary situations, and the artwork is intended for an adult audience. Since every adult has some memory of being a child, the work juxtaposes their perspectives with the children’s."

The photographic series will be on display in the central atrium of The Rose Court Building and will guide visitors through a journey exploring varying place and photographic media. Specific series address the “Unaltered Landscape,” “Building Blocks of America,” “Commuter’s Drive,” “Power of Sunlight,” and “Layers of the Trail.” The photographers present work in color, black and white, and photographic oil detailing. Such a Good SportAn exhibit featuring award-winning photographer Pamela de Marris opens at Gallery 308 on October 2. “Such a ‘Good Sport” is a collection of fine art photography of the artist’s shared life experiences with her husband James Meadows spanning thirty years. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.
De Marris explains her exhibit, “The pieces hanging on these walls describe his influence on my life, which has been more than any other person I have known. These images visually describe my changing interpretations and emotional views of the different periods we have gone through with our children and each other. Depicting Jim during the early years was basically documentation. As our relationship and children grew, I began to express feelings toward him abstractly. The most recent photographs of Jim are a combination of reality and personal concerns. Images were selected from past series, providing a chronological portrayal of interactions with family and friends.”
De Marris began taking photos when she was nine years old. She won a Brownie camera by signing up 12 new subscribers along her paper route in rural Michigan for the Niles Daily Star. "I didn't have the greatest childhood, so I used the camera to document the things I was questioning--my siblings, my parents, whatever," she says. "It allowed me to control the moment I captured."
Like 19th-century photographers, De Marris favors long exposure times. Her lighting is simple, her images lushly saturated. The colors look more like they came from an oil palette than photographic dyes. De Marris makes life-size prints, laminates them with an ultraviolet protector, and frames them herself with elegant black molding.
De Marris stated, “The importance of this exhibition lies in the fact that Jim has allowed himself to be transferred outside his around the clock physician’s duties into a personal pictorial diary about his life. This body of work shares my intense feelings regarding him, which range from happiness to anguish. The various environments, lighting styles and costumes employed to capture Jim on film reflect my concerns regarding our relationship.”
According to the photographer, while computer generated images are commonplace today, these pieces have been printed from unaltered negatives. The only slight exception is that, in some images, original negatives were spliced together. The photographs honestly represent James Meadows.
De Marris earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL. She also did graduate work in photography, video, film and digital at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad including New York, Chicago, Boston, France, Belgium, and Italy winning numerous awards and recognitions. De Marris was a faculty member at Ball State University in the Fine Art Department from 1991-2011. She has also served as a visiting artist at the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia and at the American Museum, Giverny, France.
Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly “First Thursday” exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.
224 E Main
Scabrous SciaphobiaSomething frightening is brewing in the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. An exhibit titled, “Scabrous Sciaphobia,” will hang for the month of October and it may just give some patrons the shivers. “Scabrous,” can mean, “having a rough surface,” or, “full of difficulties.” “Sciaphobia” is a fear of shadows. Together, these words create a perfect expression for the haunting month in a century-old building in downtown Muncie.
The artist Lynette Whitesell says about her work, “Scabrous Sciaphobia is defined to me as a fear of shadows that is full of difficulties. Interpreted differently, this body of work confronts life issues, fears, relationships and struggles that haunt us in our lives and how we hide from those struggles.
“I enjoy pushing our classically-conditioned society to peer at the difference between happy and sad, dark and light, etc. I am utilizing heavy impasto with strong hues juxtaposed with photos and ephemera from long ago. I relate our lives and years of experience with multiple layers on the panel. These mixed media pieces resemble encaustic work with techniques that include different textures, images, transfers, text and new to my work: stitching.”
Whitesell works in mixed media, using heavy pigments and strong hues juxtaposed with photos from long ago. One piece, titled, “The Culmination of Amy,” shows a young couple, embraced, perhaps in gardening or work clothes. They are surrounded by a collage of brightly colored papers, hand-stitched on one side, with illegible writing across the scene. Is it a postcard? The couple looks down at the ground in front of them. Are they planting something, or burying something? What difficulties or shadows are we being shown?
Born and raised in Hartford City, Indiana, Lyn is a fine arts graduate of Ball State University. She has worked in East Central Indiana for sixteen years as a graphic designer, illustrator, and creative director and has won numerous awards for her graphic design work. She has also taught at the collegiate level, conducted arts workshops, participated in the Governor’s Arts Awards, and serves on the board of Arts Place in Portland, Indiana. The recipient of two Indiana Arts Commission Artist Grants, Lyn has exhibited her work in art shows and galleries, and has work in numerous public and private collections.
The artist will speak briefly about her work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. 224 E MainMinding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual
Drawing and paintings, step aside. Sculpture will take over the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing for the month of May, thanks to Ball State University art instructor, Chet Geiselman. The artist describes himself as, “a creative problem solver, a collector and arranger of objects and information, a fabricator of visual forms, and a lifelong student of spiritual and human nature.” Bauhaus design has served as a beacon for his personal creations made of wood, steel and “recontextualized found objects.” Geiselman grew up in a small German farming community in southern Indiana. His grandfather was a blacksmith and his father and uncle were welders. Chet learned to weld and build things at a very young age, and eventually earned an MFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Guests to the January Salon Show at Gordy’s may recall a pair of framed wood sculptures by Geiselman. Neatly contained in deep white wood cases, undulating wood forms recall smooth-skinned knobby trees, or perhaps, sand dunes held in time. Each of Geiselman’s pieces suggests a formal relationship to the space it inhabits and alludes to the potential functionality of the objects that compose it. The full title of this exhibit is, “Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual.”
The artist will speak briefly about his work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM during the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. Cornerstone Center for The Arts
520 E MainJoin Cornerstone Center for Arts for the First Thursday ArtsWalk on October 1, 2015, for your last chance to see "Pop Art Presidents" by Missy Adams. The show entitled “Pop Art Presidents” is a collection of paintings honoring the lives and history of the 43 presidents of the United States.
Missy Adams is a local artist who took her love of portrait painting and history to create a series of paintings celebrating the colorful personalities and interesting lives led by the nation’s presidents. The show was painted with the limited color palette of red, white, and blue and utilizes shading and layering to create depth representing each president’s own personality. Each painting features a corresponding quote from that president displayed under their portrait.
The artist will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St, Muncie.
Adams describes painting as her passion, love, therapy, and her nightmare at times. She started painting at a young age and has been primarily self-taught. She has experimented with watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, and even coffee to paint on glass, cardboard, canvas, and paper to discover what works best. She describes her style as not realistic per se, attributing her ability to see things differently from others as her inspiration.

Monkey Thunder 5Monkey Thunder started four years ago as a one-night only, pop-up, art coup of sorts in an effort to address the wants and needs of an under-served faction of our local arts community. With little to no guarantee of staying power, it thrived. After 4 glorious iterations, Monkey Thunder is back, and it's going public!
Organized and curated by Gallery Manager Braydee Euliss, MT5 will be a month-long event with the opening reception coinciding with ArtsWalk, Downtown Muncie's biggest First Thursday of the year on October 1st from 5 - 9 PM.
The artwork featured will be an eclectic selection of both 2D and 3D work from local and regional artists, current faculty and students at Ball State University School of Art, as well as guest artists from across the country.
In addition to the work displayed at GFAF gallery, Monkey Thunder 5 includes video, performance, and other time-based artwork on view in Muncie Civic's Black Box Theatre under the direction of Maura Jasper, visual artist, filmmaker, and Assistant Professor of Intermedia Art at BSU. This 'side-show' is a Monkey Thunder favorite and offers a rare exhibit experience for both the artists and the audience.
Light refreshments will be served, DJ Jannell will provide the music, and the public is invited to attend. This is a family friendly event, but please note, the work on exhibit will be interpretive, experimental, difficult, conceptual, and subversive. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. For more information, call 765-284-8422, visit us on Facebook, or on the web.

How might concepts and methodologies of “narratology” be integrated within the design and fabrication of an object? This exhibition investigates the potential for a table to serve as a medium to express a chosen story, using narrative world-making strategies, borrowed from contemporary literary theories. Each designed table tells and teaches a different story by encouraging the message of the narratives to be discovered, interpreted, and experienced by the end user through the detailing, material selections, form, and function of the object.Title: Dynamo IV
