Gordy Fine Art & Framing opening party for Hugh SymeHugh Syme is an artist with a long career designing album covers for bands such as Rush, Def Leppard, Dream Theatre, Megadeath and many others. He will open a new exhibit in Muncie, Indiana at Gordy Fine Art and Framing on Thursday December 1, 5 – 8 pm. The show of signed prints will include some of his most iconic album art together with rare originals.  Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.  Live music by Dan Wright will be provided throughout the evening.

At 6:15 there will be an informal Question and Answer period with Hugh.

The exhibit will be on view with framed works for sale in the gallery and at gordyframing.com through January 28, 2023.

Originally from Toronto, Syme has lived in New Castle, Indiana off and on since 1987.  When working in Indiana, he collaborated with a Muncie-based photographer for set pieces, worked with local people as models, and used nearby architecture to construct the final images for his work.

Syme began his career in the music business playing keyboards and creating the album art for the Ian Thomas Band.  The manager for the Thomas band also managed Rush. In 1975 he and Rush drummer Neil Peart asked Syme to do the album art for the Caress of Steel album. This launched Syme’s career, now spanning nearly 50 years.  In Peart’s introduction to Syme’s recent book Art of Rush, he said that Syme creates with “both talent and love.” He praised “Hugh’s eye for proportion and ‘negative space’ – seldom understood as luxury, as space always does to humans.”

Syme’s clients include Time Warner, Disney, Forbes, NFL, Virgin, David Geffen, Mercury, SONY and many record labels too numerous to list. Syme has been nominated for the Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) a total of 18 times. He won for Best Album Graphics or Design in 1982 for Rush’s Moving Pictures, 1986 for Rush’s Power Windows, 1989 for Ian Thomas’s Levity, 1990 for Rush’s Presto, and 1992 for Rush’s Role the Bones

Since 2020, he has co-hosted the popular “Music Buzz” podcast with fellow Hoosiers Dane Clark, drummer for John Mellencamp, and Andy Wilson, president of Elevate Entertainment.   musicbuzzzpodcast.com

Syme recently launched his gallery shop website: hughsymeartshop.com

    Muncie Artist’s Guild
    Various locations
The Muncie Artist Guild’s “Artist of the Month” for December 2022 is Rosaline Franklin

    Rosaline’s artist statement:
"In my eyes there is nothing quite like looking out toward the horizon and taking in the beauty that can be found in nature!  In elementary school, I quickly fell in love with art class and always looked forward to painting.  I took this love home with me and begged my dad to buy me some paints!  I would try my best with my store brand water colors and put on little art shows for my family.

When I was a little older I began to appreciate nature more and more before discovering “The Joy of Painting'' hosted on PBS by none other than Bob Ross.  The way he was able to create whole landscape paintings from nothing in the span of thirty minutes was inspiring!  I decided I wanted to try my hand at wet on wet but found oils too expensive and settled on some acrylic paints.  I can’t quite mimic the look of Bob Ross style paintings but I really enjoy trying my best to make acrylics look like oils!

This particular series of paintings combined warm and cool colors!  Winter is my favorite season and I wanted to create snowy landscapes without using too much white.  I settled with multiple hues of grays and blues for my cool colors and exciting oranges and yellows for my warmer colors.  I love acrylic paints because little mistakes can be corrected quickly and I can come back sooner than with oils to add more to my canvas!"

Rosaline Franklin will be displaying her work at the following businesses for the month of December:

Kimberly and Scott Anderson are beloved artists in our area, making art and teaching art students here for over 25 years.  Gordy has represented their work for over 20 years and we are proud to highlight them in a new exhibit on Thursday February 2, 5 – 8 pm. Conjure, Combine, Continue implies the dedication and shear persistence of their artistic practice with works they have produced throughout their careers.  They will be on hand during the evening to engage with viewers and answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. Kim Anderson is a Junior High Art Teacher at Jay County Schools.  She has a studio and kilns in Hartford City, Indiana, where she lives. Her art considers the intricacies of life and the environment. “I am influenced by two spheres of thought: the physical sciences and the human psyche. I find that science considers facts, and the psyche discloses the mysteries of life. I am not searching for truth, but for a secret.”

Scott Anderson is a Professor of Painting at Ball State University since 1995 and has exhibited professionally for the past 30 years. “My paintings attempt to show idea systems in conflict through a mixture of styles, surfaces, symbols, appropriated images, and forms that have been assembled into a contrasting visual stew.”

The exhibit will be on view with works for sale in the gallery and at gordyframing.com through March 11, 2023.

Our Artist of the Month for the Muncie Artists Guild for February 2023 is Jennifer "Jennie" Irving.

Jennifer Irving is a Delaware County resident. She started working in watercolor and acrylic painting in the past few years after retiring from her career in Massage Therapy. She has always enjoyed working with her hands and creating. For her 50th birthday, she decided to gift herself a watercolor course and supplies with local artist Cindy Norrick-Turner. Jennie found she really enjoyed the merging of the colors and results which could arise.  She loves working in a non-traditional style and likes alcohol inks and yupo paper for their magical movement and vibrancy. She continued to take various classes and explored mediums and techniques.

Previous avenues of expression have included weaving, stained glass and jewelry making. She has a love of color and textures. An avid gardener, Jennie notices the shadows and structure in nature and finds joy and solace in natural flowing designs."

Jennie will be displaying her work at the following businesses for the month of February:
