MUNCIE, INDIANA— That One Film Festival Celebrates Experimental Filmmakers During Two-Day Event

This September 11th and 12th marks the return of That One Film Festival, Muncie’s own biennial experimental film festival. The two-day event will be a free live streaming event available online with an in-person, socially-distanced, outdoor opening night screening at Canan Commons on Friday, September 11th (600 S Walnut St, Muncie, Indiana) where visitors can watch the first two programs on a large movie screen, and participate in the live stream content. The Saturday, September 12th events will be streamed entirely online.

The event is produced by students in an immersive learning course at the Ball State University School of Art, with artistic directors Associate Professor Maura Jasper and Assistant Professor Kristin Reeves, in partnership with the Muncie Arts and Culture Council.

That One Film Festival celebrates the work of moving image artists from around the globe. The festival specializes in experimental, no/low budget, and avant-garde film and video art. This year, more than 275 films were submitted to That One for consideration. Of those submissions, 36 individual films have been selected for this year’s program, in addition to screenings of work by the festival’s two jurors, Karissa Hahn and Laura Parnes, and a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris.

All opening night activities at Canan Commons on Friday, September 11th, are free and open to the public. Tickets are required and can be reserved for free at thatonefilmfestival.com. Viewers (grouped by household) will be directed to marked areas on the Canan Commons green which will be situated to promote social distancing. Masks are required until viewers are seated. Viewers are encouraged to bring their own picnic, non-alcoholic beverages, chairs, and blankets as there will be no food or drinks served at the event. Porta-potties and hand sanitizer will be available. This event is rated PG-13 for strong language, and viewer discretion is advised. All events are Eastern Standard Time.

Seating at Canan Commons begins at 5:15p on Friday, September 11th. The night kicks off at 5:45p with an introduction by festival Master of Ceremonies Dennis Everette, and Muncie Arts and Culture Council Executive Director Erin Williams. The live stream screening will begin at 6:00p with a selection of work by Karissa Hahn, PlySpace Virtual Resident and co-juror at this year’s festival, followed by two one-hour programs. The screenings will end at 9:15p, after which there will be a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris. The event will conclude at 10:00p. The opening night programs will also be live streamed at thatonefilmfestival.com for those who do not attend the in-person event.

The festival will continue online on Saturday, September 12th, as a live stream only. Beginning at 11:30a, five one-hour programs will be presented throughout the day and evening, as well as a screening of work by New York artist and co-juror Laura Parnes. Each program will be followed by a short intermission. There will be a scheduled dinner break from 5:30p to 7:30p. The program will conclude at 9:45p with the announcement of the three festival award winners. The full program of films and event times is available at www.thatonefilmfestival.com.

The pandemic has challenged everyone on Earth, and most recently, my related challenge has been as long-time Director of YART, Muncie’s Yard Sale for Art, coming up - and going fully online - on Thursday, October 1st. The Fall 2020 Muncie YART will happen! All the talented YART Artists will have their work for sale in a special Facebook group I’ve created. We are keeping that yard sale vibe going by all Art being priced under $40 and all Artists handling their own sales. The last Fall YART showcased over 150 Artists! YART is my giant twice-a-year volunteer gift to Muncie. I never charge any Artist to participate; and I have no staff and no budget. Apocalypse 2020

Its been a strange year. Lets sacrifice these last 365 by a night of intense debauchery... and mockery of course. Mask Required. Like a proper full face mask a la Halloween/Apocalypse/Plaque Doctor style. We will be following ALL the rules to the T, burning lots of incense and chasing the taste of this year down with champagne and fernet-branca. You can order what you want but you know... champagne goes with NYE and Fernet is a great digestif! We will have cheap drinks available so dont be shy, we need all the help we can get to weather another few months of shit weather, half a city gone or inaide, and a pandemic to boot!

Sensational Barnes Brothers at Canan Commons for the Muncie Three Trails Music Series!

8-piece Memphis soul/gospel powerhouse the Sensational Barnes Brothers will perform in a FREE, all ages, outdoor concert as part of the Muncie Three Trails Music Series! The concert will take place at 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 24th at Canan Commons in downtown Muncie, Indiana. Opening will be rock ‘n’ soul instrumentalists the SBB Band. This concert is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County.

The Sensational Barnes Brothers are a melting pot of the old and the new. Bridging the gap between traditional black gospel and the soul sounds of Stax and Al Green, Chris and Courtney Barnes unleashed a critically acclaimed debut album, Nobody’s Fault But My Own, in 2020 and have caught fire throughout the Midwest and nation-wide. Chris and Courtney are able to dive deep into their roots, creating a sound that reflects the music of their history, all the while drawing in a modern-day audience.

The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is unique in the state of Indiana as the only annual music series featuring current recording artists of national stature and critical acclaim in FREE public concerts. Bluegrass greats Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper will perform in a FREE, all ages, outdoor concert as part of the 2021 Muncie Three Trails Music Series! The concert will take place at 7:00 PM on Saturday, August 7th at Canan Commons in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. Muncie's Bashville Boys will open the show.

Michael Cleveland is one of the most decorated fiddle players in bluegrass history, with 12 IBMA “Fiddle Player of the Year” awards. Michael was also inducted into the National Fiddle Player Hall of Fame in 2018, and, along with his group, Flamekeeper, most recently won the 2020 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for their release, “Tall Fiddller”. “He plays fearless and it’s intoxicating to play with him because he makes you play fearless,” says Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill. “It’s wicked to see how much music he pulls out of a bow. He’s untouchable.” In addition to Vince Gill, Michael has also played with such legendary musicians as Marty Stuart, Tim O’Brien, J.D. Crowe and the New South, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Larry Sparks, and Doyle Lawson.

Since forming his group Flamekeeper in 2006, they have won 6 additional IBMA awards for Instrumental Group of the Year. The band’s current line-up of Josh Richards on guitar, Nathan Livers on mandolin, Jasiah Strode on banjo, and Chris Douglas on bass, definitely keeps the flame burning bright. Acclaimed Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel will perform in a FREE, all ages, outdoor concert as part of the 2021 Muncie Three Trails Music Series! The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged The Wheel as "one of the best live acts in the business." Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level. The alumni roster is well over 80+ members, including an impressive list of musicians who have performed with the artists such as Bob Dylan, George Strait, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, and many more. A quick scan of awards, such as "Touring Band of the Year" (CMAs, 1976) and "Lifetime Achievement in Performance" (Americana Music Awards, 2009), not to mention their near dominance of the Grammy "Country Instrumental" category over the years (they have won ten Grammys overall!), reflects the reputation of the band’s musicianship. Currently the band consists of Ray Benson on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Katie Shore on Fiddle and Vocals, David Sanger on Drums, Dennis Ludiker on Fiddle, Mandolin, and Vocals, Josh Hoag on Bass, Connor Forsyth on Piano and Vocals, and Flavio Pasquetto on Steel Guitar. Ray Benson fell in love with Western Swing because of its unique combination of American blues, swing, and traditional fiddling, and due its demanding musical chops. It’s what Benson calls "jazz with a cowboy hat". It’s a thrill to hear live and, between those Texas Twin Fiddles and Boogie Piano, you can bet you’ll be dancin’ down the aisles and swingin’ all night long when the Wheel rolls into Muncie!

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 2nd!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 2nd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages pandemic-safe interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes.
